Unilever’s legal function plays a critical role in the company’s continued success. Serving as professional advisors, gatekeepers, and strategic business partners, Unilever’s legal team enables the company to be fearless and act with confidence, speed, and agility. The legal function has a wide range of subject matter expertise who collectively guide Unilever’s business groups and functions on laws, regulations, and Unilever’s Code of Business Principles.
Who You Are & What You’ll Do:
The summer intern for the Litigation & Business Integrity (“LBI”) group is expected to support the various expertise areas within the group: major litigation, business integrity, investigations, privacy, and competition law. Candidates must have completed at least one, and preferably two, full-time years of law school at an accredited US law school. Prior experience working in a major law firm or the legal department of a major multinational corporation is preferred. The candidate should have an interest in pursuing a legal career in litigation, compliance, privacy, or competition law.
The work may relate to any of Unilever’s business groups or central functions. The intern may request or be asked to work for other components of the legal function to include intellectual property, marketing, labor and employment, supply chain, and more.
The candidate should be available to work in Unilever’s US headquarters in Hoboken, New Jersey at least two days per week, with the option to work from the office regularly. There is a possibility for domestic or international travel up to 25% of the overall summer commitment.
The position reports in to the Global Head of Litigation & Business Integrity, but it is expected that particular assignments throughout the summer will be supervised by various other leaders within the LBI group.
Examples of Potential Assignments:
The candidate can expect varies work assignments such as assisting in internal compliance investigations; assisting in ongoing litigation and pre-litigation disputes; conducting compliance risk assessments and preparing compliance training and communications; drafting advice on legal and compliance topics for business and functional leaders; preparing presentations for senior leadership; and more.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree plus at least one, and preferably two years of full-time study towards a JD degree at an accredited US law school
- Previous legal experience at either a major law firm or the inhouse legal department of a major multinational is preferred
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to think analytically and grapple with complexity
- Ability effectively to manage multiple demanding matters simultaneously
- Ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders across Unilever and with outside counsel
- Outstanding judgment, business acumen, and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
- A ‘customer service’ mindset
- Unyielding commitment to integrity
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in consumer products, health, nutrition, beauty, and home care
- Experience working in a global setting
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally
- Foreign language abilities
- Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Strong project management skills
