Summary
This position is a 1-on-1 Special Education Instructional Assistant for a student assigned to the Focus service pathway. Position Summary:
This position provides full-day, 1-on-1 support to a student with multiple disabilities. Duties include personal care, behavior support, academic facilitation, communication modeling using an augmentative talker, and assisting with mobility needs. Follow detailed routines and collaborate with classroom teachers and case manager.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Assist student with transferring to and from the bus.
- Accompany student throughout the day as he attends his gen ed. classes.
- Provide support for hallway transitions for safety and help student manage his belongings.
- Model and prompt use of talker for conversation and to elicit responses for academic participation.
- Read materials aloud to student, record pages in reading log, and take notes/record responses in his notebooks across all classes.
- Follow teacher-directed lessons in the gen ed setting and provide student with modifications for expressing his understanding.
- Scribe for student for notetaking and completing school work.
- Provide physical prompting and guided movement during P.E. and other activities as needed.
- Assist student with operating laptop using adaptive programs to complete school assignments.
- Provide direct support for bathrooming and changing clothes and/or incontinence underwear.
- Provide direct support at mealtimes.
- Collaborate with case manager and Gen. Ed. Teachers to develop modifications for school work.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with students with complex needs, non-verbal communication, or significant physical supports (preferred).
- Training or comfort with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices/talkers.
- Ability to perform physical assistance including transfers, toileting support, and guided movement.
- Patience, flexibility, strong observational and note-taking skills, and ability to follow detailed routines.
- Basic computer literacy to log into student account and operate school programs.
- Able to assist with guiding a student who may occasionally use a wheelchair and needs assistance with dressing and toileting.
The job of Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 is done for the purpose/s of assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or in a self-contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel; and attending IEP meetings.
Special Education Assistant job duties vary according to the school/program needs, i.e., generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, autism, etc.
Examples of duties
- Adapts, under the direction of the teacher. classroom activities, assignments and/or materials for the purpose of providing an opportunity for all special education students to participate in classroom activities.
- Administers a variety of materials and assignments (e.g. tests, homework, grades papers, folders, etc.) for the purpose of assisting teacher in evaluating students' progress and/or organizing the individual needs of the student.
- Administers first aid and medical assistance as required for the purpose of providing appropriate care for injured children.
- Assists students requiring support in addressing personal care needs due to medical condition and/or physical limitations for the purpose of allowing students to function in school environment.
- Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
