Director, Strategic Planning & Operations (R&D)
What you will do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen is seeking a Director of Strategic Planning and Operations (SPO) to support Amgen’s Head of R&D and R&D Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in advancing medicines to patient. In this vital role, the individual will have opportunities to impact a broad spectrum of partners, from functional R&D leaders to the broader organization to Amgen’s executive management.
This position works directly with the Head of Amgen R&D to efficiently and effectively make decisions and run the broader R&D organization while balancing short- and long-term needs. Priorities will vary throughout the year based on evolving needs, with the expectation that most work will generally fall into four themes:
R&D strategy evolution and execution; R&D SLT connectivity and alignment; Special projects; Thought partner to Head of R&D.
The ideal candidate will need to be adept at clearly and proactively communicating, comfortable managing ambiguity and competing priorities, and able to shift between strategic thinking and tactical execution. Responsibilities will need to be implemented within the context of Amgen’s portfolio and evolving external dynamics (e.g., competition, policy, pricing trends, etc.), requiring someone with broad industry interests and an ability to continuously learn. Success will require a collaborative approach and mentality, connecting people across the organization to the information they need to succeed in their jobs.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Connectivity: Serve as a pivotal link and representative between the R&D SLT and other department leaders (across all of Amgen, with disproportionate focus on the R&D organization and Office of the Chief Medical Officer), fostering collaborative relationships and facilitating effective communication; includes leading the R&D SPO network
- Thought Partner: Act as a strategic ally and sounding board for the Head of R&D, providing feedback on initiatives and organizational decisions, suggesting new directions, gathering / sharing insights from across the R&D organization, and playing an active role in change management
- Leader enablement: Anticipate Head of R&D’s needs for upcoming meetings / engagements and proactively engage with key stakeholders to ensure readiness / provide guidance to stakeholders as needed
- CEO Staff & Board of Director Updates: On a regular basis, lead activities for R&D updates to CEO staff and to Amgen’s board of directors, including suggesting topics for inclusion, partnering with senior leaders to obtain key information, and synthesizing information into focused, effective messages for a diverse audience
- R&D SLT Meeting Facilitation: Organize SLT meetings (as well as periodic on-sites / off-sites) by identifying key business objectives and pulling through with timely topics and speakers, working with speakers to craft efficient / impactful presentations, and moving on post-meeting action items
- R&D Engagement: In partnership with Corporate Affairs, plan and implement R&D-wide all staffs, including thoughtful agenda construction, inclusion of external and non-R&D internal speakers, and effective presentation materials
- Ad Hoc Project Leadership: Lead and manage select cross-functional projects, driving them towards successful completion while ensuring alignment with organizational goals
