About the role

Department Overview

This position is part of a small research team investigating visual processing in the eye, using the mouse as an animal model. The appointed person will conduct experiments independently, including designing protocols, trouble shooting, and analyzing data. Their research projects will include the following techniques: retinal cryosectioning and immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, PCR, plasmid preps, cell culture, transfections, western blots, immunoprecipitation. They will be responsible for lab management, including training and supervision of new lab personnel, ordering supplies and maintaining lab infrastructure, managing the mouse colony, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. They will supervise junior lab members and train new lab members in lab procedures and techniques. They will participate in weekly lab meetings and will assist in preparing research manuscripts and grant applications.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Lead project management in key areas of research. Independently design and conduct experiments. Develop standard operating procedures and new methods and protocols.
  • Work with PI to develop research goals and strategic plan for achieving them.
  • Analyze and interpret data, make figures for manuscripts, grants, and presentations,
  • Manage mouse colony
  • Manage lab infrastructure including managing inventory and ordering supplies
  • Supervise and train junior lab members

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience OR
  • Master's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field
  • Electrophysiology (ERGs, patch-clamp), mouse colony management, molecular biology (PCR, subcloning, plasmid preps)

  • Mouse handling, retinal anatomy and physiology, excellent communication skills including strong writing ability, strong organizational ability.

  • Study Coordinator certificate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cell culture, immunohistochemistry
  • Presentation skills (poster, short talk)
