Engineering Manager, Release Engineering
The Release Engineering team is responsible for software deployments and tooling development for Fastly’s CDN. We are looking for a Manager, Release Engineering, to join our team who is excited to work in a collaborative and fast-paced agile environment, is proactive, and is passionate about self-service tooling and automation. You will play a key role in expanding our platform release tooling with a goal of automation and self-service for our engineering partners.
As an SRE team, you’ll work in a dynamic environment ranging from troubleshooting linux hosts to writing software that powers our self service tooling. You and your team have a unique and insightful role in the company -- and the tools you're developing will have broad engineering wide impact.
What You'll Do:
- Manage a distributed, on-call SRE engineering team that is building and supporting automated release tooling and services with Go, Javascript and Rust.
- Support and mitigate operational toil related to release engineering on Linux-based infrastructure
- Act as a teacher and coach; providing technical mentorship and being a force multiplier to the software development velocity of the team.
- Provide regular feedback to engineers to ensure their professional growth.
- Define and prioritize features, new projects, and research activities into regular releases. Keep the team aware of the timelines for delivery, and coordinate the process of turning user requirements into coherent designs.
- Partner with engineering teams to build scalable tools and infrastructure to release software that is reliable, safe, sustainable, and secure.
- Clearly communicate upward and outward to set expectations for roadmaps and deliverables with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Evolve practices around software deployment processes and release quality.
What We're Looking For:
- Significant related technical experience as a Platform or Site Reliability Engineering engineer working with low level distributed systems and infrastructure as code. Most Engineering Managers at Fastly have at least 8 years of related hands-on experience.
- At least 3 years of technical leadership or team lead experience.
- A pragmatic, meticulous, and empathetic leader who fosters collaboration within the team and prioritizes understanding stakeholder and end-user needs.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams and stakeholders to understand tooling needs and align on release strategies.
- Experience in strategic planning and roadmapping for technical initiatives, translating business goals into actionable roadmap items.
- A leader who trusts and empowers their team while maintaining the ability to engage with technical details and provide guidance when necessary.
- Proven experience in leading and guiding teams through multi-month, multi-team projects from inception to successful delivery and widespread adoption.
- Awareness of industry trends, tools, and best practices, with the ability to effectively evaluate their strategic value and associated costs.
- Significant experience with and a preference for working with globally distributed teams
- An incremental and experimental growth mindset.
- Passionate about Demo’s and showcasing new features and roadmaps.
We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:
- Previous people and team leadership
- Familiarity with tools and technologies such as Linux, Git, Jenkins, Chef, Prometheus, and Splunk
- Experience with Go and/or Rust
- Experience with Kubernetes, and configuration management tools like Chef.
