The Freemium R&D team oversees the entire user journey on Spotify and ensures we engage with people in innovative ways, every step of the way. Our team grows Spotify’s audience by finding future listeners around the world and delivering the right value to them, at the right time. As an Engineering Manager in the Freemium Business Unit, you will have the opportunity to have a significant impact on Spotify’s growth by reaching new users, markets and audiences. We achieve this by truly understanding the needs of our users, and by innovating to solve real problems for them, building solutions across the entire Spotify infrastructure to support our goal.
This position in the Messaging Platform & Tooling team manages critical backend systems that deliver emails, push notifications and in-app messaging for the entire Spotify user base, including integration with third-party vendors. The reliable functioning of these systems is business-critical for Spotify's messaging and marketing campaign purposes.

What You'll Do

  • Work closely with your product counterpart, taking accountability for technology to deliver on the product strategy - realizing a high quality user experience.
  • Use experimentation, data and insights, e.g. through A/B tests to make the appropriate priorities and decisions.
  • Participate in and challenge your team's systems architecture, making the appropriate trade-offs based on quality, scalability, performance and cost aligned with the team’s tech strategy.
  • Grow the technical expertise of your team through technical leadership and advocating for sound software engineering practices such as continuous delivery, reliability and observability.
  • Lead a backend/data engineering heavy team owning, developing and maintaining business critical systems serving the entire Spotify user base.
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative and productive engineering team in line with our values.
  • Grow people and the team through hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback, process and continuous improvement efforts.

Who You Are

  • Experienced with leading, coaching, and mentoring individuals and teams.
  • Solid experience leading organizational and leadership challenges that come with scaling an engineering team.
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about software engineering.
  • Proven experience with applying agile software development practices to create high-performing teams.
  • Passionate about creating a healthy culture for individual growth, have interests in inclusion and belonging efforts and a high regard for championing positive mental health practices

  • Working hours? We operate within the Eastern Standard time zone for collaboration and ask that all be located in that time zone.

The United States base range for this position is $156,275 - $223,250. The benefits available for this position include health insurance, six months paid parental leave, 401(k) retirement plan, 23 paid days off, 13 paid flexible holidays. These ranges may be modified in the future.
