About the role

Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Network Engineer I position is responsible for assisting in the installation, testing, analysis and ongoing support of basic elements of the network facilities (including power, communications machinery, software, lines, modems, and terminals), to ensure stable network performance. Monitors systems for network status, alerting management of network failures or degradation, and assisting in performing corrective action. Troubleshoots networking and operating systems problems, providing technical assistance and resolution. Understands and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures relating to network technologies.

Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Communicates (oral and written) effectively with customers, vendors, colleagues, and management about services, system availability, and information.
  • Partners with other technical support personnel or vendors in the management and support of Houston Methodist systems.
  • Support ITIL processes and conforms to applicable policies and procedures.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with the administration and maintenance of the access layer network and/or telecommunication systems.
  • Under supervision of department management, assists in complex LAN/WAN or Voice integrations including some Data Center, WiFi, distribution layer and other complex communication technologies.
  • Identifies, clarifies and resolves issues and risks, escalating as appropriate.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in the maintenance of all IDF/MDF closets including but not limited to UPS', Cabling, etc.
  • Assists in quality control testing, policy implementation, and training of end users on communication channels as needed. (i.e. VPN, WebEx, phones, etc)
  • Assists with updating and maintaining drawings, monitoring systems, and documentation where applicable.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Practices good time management and good assessment in professional decision making. Prepares timely reports for management regarding systems status and activity.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Proactively manages own professional development, including the pursuit of higher level certifications through training, seminars, and/or lab work. Completes Individual Development Plan (IDP
  • Seeks opportunities to work with more senior engineers to acquire deeper understanding and knowledge of deployed systems and Houston Methodist infrastructure.
