Job Title: Editor or Senior Editor, Philosophy (Acquisitions, Books)
Location: New York - Hybrid Working Model
The Editor/Senior Editor acquires and publishes high quality content within the field of philosophy. The Editor/Senior Editor drives growth of the list and develops the philosophy portfolio as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio of the Publishing Unit, while overseeing and managing the editorial processes within the team and implementing strategies to deliver upon the departmental objectives. The Editor/Senior Editor works together with the Editorial Director to review development opportunities for the portfolio. The focus of the role is on further development and growth of part of the philosophy portfolio. The Editor/Senior Editor will report into the Editorial Director for Springer Humanities and commission 60-80 titles per year. This role is based in our New York office on a hybrid working model.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains (part of) the existing philosophy list;
- Acquires and develops new products that fit within the strategic objectives determined for the Publishing Unit to achieve budgets;
- Seeks out new authors and books: actively researches ideas, topics, and people for potential books and book series in line with the list and company strategy;
- Generates proposals and recommendations for new projects;
- Keeps up-to-date with developments in the field;
- Develops a strategic plan for further growth of (part of the) philosophy portfolio;
- Identifies and drives forward new areas for growth; be highly aware of and motivated by changes in the wider publishing landscape, such as digital transformation;
- Evaluates proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, and market and offers editorial feedback;
- Negotiates the acquisition/contract process with authors, signing an agreed number of new titles;
- Liaises with global editorial colleagues as well as production, sales, marketing, and publicity;
- Initiates and/or approves product title lists for booth presentation;
- Business travel (domestic/international).
Experience, skills and qualifications:
- College degree preferably in the humanities or social sciences, advanced degree a plus;
- Minimum 3 years of related experience
- Experience in an editorial acquisition capacity and/or in an academic publishing environment;
- Entrepreneurial: results driven and outcome focused
- Good communication, interpersonal and networking skills;
- Effective negotiating skills;
- Ability to establish effective working relationships both internally and externally;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail;
- Good organizational and time management skills;
- Able to be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems, queries and opportunities

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Editor: $66k - $80k / Senior Editor: $91k - $100k. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
