A Brief Overview
The Staff Attorney provides legal representation to the organization in claims-related litigation through collaboration with the Litigation Counsel and litigation support staff. The Staff Attorney manages claims and serves as counsel on specified hospital liability and tort litigation in consultation with designated in-house colleagues. The Staff Attorney also assists other attorneys within the organization as needed. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Visions and Values.
What you will do
- Administers and prepares witnesses for depositions, formulates case strategies, handles discovery, and interacts with medical operations and corporate personnel.
- Represents the organization in hearings and trials, interacts with outside counsel; takes depositions of witnesses, parties, and experts.
- Participates in setting financial reserves for claims.
- Interacts with insurers and actively contributes to the overall risk management of the organization and its employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate
Experience Qualifications
- 5-7 years Healthcare, insurance, malpractice, product liability, complex litigation
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge and understanding of state laws and regulations affecting healthcare organizations.
- Knowledge of healthcare industry’s trends, directions, major issues, regulatory considerations, and trendsetters.
- Ability to gather necessary information to determine damage and liability implications and other case-specific issues.
- Knowledge of the procedural and judicial rules governing the litigation of medical malpractice and other claims
- Knowledge of the full spectrum of activities, practices, tools, and considerations for managing and litigating medical malpractice and other claims.

Supervision Provided by this Position
- Provides daily and/or project direction to paralegal and legal secretary.
Physical Demands
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
