Job Description

Position Overview

The Child Death Review Board is seeking a dedicated Health Educator to lead efforts in injury prevention and reducing preventable deaths through professional education and program development. This role will focus on delivering training sessions to professionals, community organizations, and students on critical safety topics such as fire safety, water safety, ATV safety, infant safe sleep, firearm safety, and more.

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit, and organization, but may include the following: It is estimated that 80% of work time would be devoted the following educational activities:

  • Conducts needs assessments at organizational and community levels to determine appropriate theoretical basis from which to initiate programmatic and strategic planning.

  • Collaborates with Child Death Review Board staff to further achieve program goals by utilizing trend data related to child injuries and fatalities.

  • Develops and implements evidence-based, professional and child-friendly curricula and health promotion programs on various injury prevention topics.

  • Establishes and maintains community partnerships to schedule and deliver impactful trainings.

  • Assists in developing and implementing injury prevention programs in collaboration with key partners.

  • Provides engaging and educational sessions tailored for different audiences, including professionals, schools, and community groups.

  • Prepares and delivers public presentations for selected audiences.

It is estimated that 20% of work time would be devoted to the following case management activities:

  • Obtains records from various entities including law enforcement, hospitals, schools, etc.

  • Prepares cases for board member review and works directly with boards in the review of the cases.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher to prepare education materials such as oral presentations, articles for publication, and curricula.

  • Ability to analyze data trends related to child injuries and deaths to inform training content.

  • Ability to speak to the public.

  • Comfort with handling and presenting difficult subject matter in a professional and sensitive manner.

  • Strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

  • Special Note: The nature of this position will require the individual to review traumatic documents that are graphic in nature on a regular basis and perhaps see disturbing photos.
