Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is currently recruiting a Director of Environmental Services and Laundry to plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and control housekeeping services and laundry operations for Central State Hospital and Hiram W. Davis Medical Center. The Director of EVS/Laundry will administer the administrative aspect of the housekeeping program at the Petersburg Campus of DBHDS by providing guidance and supervision to the Housekeeping/Laundry departments, develop programs and procedures to facilitate all matters directly or indirectly to housekeeping functions on campus.

The successful incumbent will have considerable knowledge of managerial techniques required to motivate employees, supervise others, and effectively communicate orally and in writing. The incumbent will have considerable knowledge in the use of chemicals and equipment in a manner safe for patients/clients and employees in a Behavioral Health environment. Will have the knowledge of current Joint Commission and Medicare/Medicaid (CMS) standards.

Job Duties:
- Plans and directs the Housekeeping and Laundry Services to ensure that all quality Assurance indicators are below established thresholds and customer needs are met consistent with CSH goals and objectives;
- Maintains a holistic view of the campus such that resources can be deployed in the most efficient and effective manner.
- Prepares and ensures follow through of daily work and special assignment assignments.
- Fosters a robust culture of customer service excellence and accountability throughout the hospital, evaluates department performance, develops and implements corrective action based on input from customer feedback.
- On an on-going basis, develops, implements and refines departmental policies and procedures so that standards of performance and productivity are in compliance and customer focused.
- Makes sure all quality assurance indicators are within established thresholds.
- Keeps ADA apprised of significant activities. Responds to directed actions within three working days and critical issues within twenty-four hours.
- Weekly, monthly and throughout the year monitors and manages the department budget so that all fiscal and budgetary requirements are complied with, and the department operates within budget.
- Assess and ensure staffing needs are met;
- Oversees maintenance needs of equipment needed for delivery of environmental services and laundry services to ensure safety and operation.
- Consistently attends required meetings
- Perform tasks assigned by supervisor.
- Keeps up to date on Environmental Services and Laundry inspection standards.
- Diligently pursues compliance with Health Sanitation Regulations, TJC and Medicare/Medicaid requirements.
- Completes tracer activities to analyze department performance, and prioritize improvements
- Through recommendations to administration, implementation of plans and diligent follow through, achievement will result in meeting required standards.
- Work closely with Central Office, other Environmental and Laundry managers, and/or consultants when needed.
