About the Role / Summary: 

This role is responsible for developing and managing business intelligence, data, and analytics across our brands to understand business performance from various angles and to enable every team to make data-driven decisions. As the first data & analytics leader on our team, you’ll play a key role in building out our core BI infrastructure (namely Looker) and building the future of the BI function and organization at the company. You’ll build reporting based on business needs, train stakeholders to be self-sufficient in our reporting platforms, and provide specialized ad hoc analysis.  


In this role, you’ll support all commercial channels to understand trends, identify strengths, and spotlight opportunities for improvement. You will work with teams across the business, including planning, merchandising, supply chain, marketing, product, and finance, to understand their needs and enable them to access accurate, timely data. To deliver this, you’ll manage our current Data Engineer and partner with the broader engineering team to ensure that the needed data is clean, comprehensive, and available. This role will report into our COO.


Our ideal candidate is scrappy, self-motivated, and attentive to detail, with excellent communication skills. You are equally comfortable writing performant SQL and building dashboards as you are talking to business stakeholders about their needs.  You are a strong data educator, helping business partners develop their comfort and independence with data. Our expectation is that this candidate will also be a people manager, initially having one direct report and additional team members as the business needs.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal business partners to identify opportunities, understand objectives, and rationalize efforts to support strategic business objectives with both short-term and long-term deliverables in an environment with high expectations for swift action.
  • Review & assess all of our existing analytics infrastructure. Identify key gaps and identify opportunities for improvement, simplification, standardization, or automation, and prioritize solutions to enhance our decision making
  • Continuously develop new data models and methods, and drive analyses by applying your expertise in data modeling and the presentation of data to present actionable insights to internal stakeholders.
  • Create dashboards to provide actionable insights in a digestible way to internal stakeholders
  • Develop, produce and distribute ad hoc and standardized reports and analyses.
  • Identify the root causes of changes in key metrics and run tests to validate your hypotheses.
  • Independence in determining and establishing data analysis priorities to balance ongoing projects with requests from multiple team members.
  • Proactively monitor data to ensure accuracy and identify issues; provide thoughtful and timely solutions to problems.
  • Contribute to building a quantitative and data-based decision-making culture
  • Own relationships with various business stakeholders, manage expectations, and align efforts to meet business needs by developing strong communication between teams
  • Enable data consumers to answer critical questions and gain insights using trusted, sanctioned data sets designed to be high-performance, reusable, and scalable
  • Support teams across the company to enable self-serve analytics through our analytics tools and owning the administration, adoption, and end-user training support of those tools
  • Write production-quality data transformations in SQL, with an eye towards performance, maintainability, scalability, and reliability
  • Provide clear requirements to Data Platforms & Data Engineering for essential reporting pipelines.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 8+ years experience working with data in the e-commerce / B2B / B2C or similar industry
  • Bachelor's degree or an advanced degree in Analytics, Information Systems, or an equivalent work experience
  • Strong understanding of analytics platforms, data visualization tools, data warehouses, and data pipeline tools
  • Advanced experience writing and optimizing SQL queries, manipulating & analyzing data in excel, and working with large data sets (Python or R is a plus), especially within cloud-based data warehouses like BigQuery or Snowflake
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills: digging deep into the data, thinking from first principles, and delivering the best results. 
  • Experience managing and working with various data structures and common methods in data transformation, data validation and audit.
