The Senior Career Specialist (level 14) provides primary career services support to Duke Master of Business, Climate, & Sustainability (MBCS) students. The MBCS is a brand-new joint degree program between the Fuqua School of Business and the Nicholas School of the Environment, designed to prepare students to lead at the intersection of business, climate, and sustainability. In this capacity, s/he provides comprehensive career coaching, employer development and relationship management, and program development and delivery that prepares the students to succeed in the job market. This position reports to the Program Director for MMS Career Services and works closely with the CMC team and specialty master’s program staff.

 

Given the innovative and evolving nature of this program, the Senior Career Specialist will play a critical role in establishing and refining career resources, ensuring high-quality support for students and alignment with employer and market needs. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, comfortable working in dynamic environments, and skilled at building new programs and services through collaboration with multiple stakeholders. The Senior Career Specialist also plays a key role in ensuring consistency with and maximizing efficiencies between the career services offerings of the MBCS and other Fuqua programs. Fundamental to success in this role will be proactive information sharing, collaboration, and communication across the CMC and within Fuqua and with partners in the Nicholas School of the Environment. 

 

What You Will Do

Career coaching and counseling

• Advise students in person or virtually on both an appointment and drop-in basis. Vary counseling style according to student’s individual needs and concerns. Counseling may include providing assistance and support to:
• Identify students’ career interests through self-assessment;
• Develop a job search strategy reflective of the student’s interests, skills, and goals;
• Review and polish resumes, cover letters, and other correspondence;
• Conduct mock interviews and provide feedback to improve interview techniques;
• Decide between employment offers, considering short and long-term career goals
• Develop a strategy to negotiate an employment offer.
• Develop deep expertise about MBCS students and opportunities to effectively address the unique components of the job search in various job functions and industries.
• Stay current on recruiting practices through interaction with employers and attendance at relevant conferences or seminars to optimize advice.
• Manage student notes and track appointments in a timely manner.

 

Employer engagement

• Develop a strategic employer engagement and business development plan that aligns with student interests and market needs.
• Collaborate with current Fuqua and Nicholas school staff to leverage existing relationships and partnerships to find innovative ways to connect students with potential employers and alumni.
• Execute an outreach plan to establish new relationships.
• Facilitate employer and alumni participation in on-campus and virtual recruiting events, industry panels, and career readiness programs.
• Represent MBCS and the institution at professional conferences, industry associations, and employer site visits to promote the brand and foster long-term partnerships.
• Track, monitor, and evaluate employer satisfaction, employer engagement, hiring outcomes, and relationship development activities.

 

 

Program and resource development

• Collaborate closely with those designing and delivering the four-term MBCS seminar course to deliver career content through that class.
• Identify keynote speakers and panelists who complement key CMC messages, help students’ build critical skills, and lend credibility to our programming.
