Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Pharmacy
Mayo ClinicAbout the role
The Department of Pharmacy at Mayo Clinic invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position to study optimization of renally active medications. Our team leads nationally recognized research in precision dosing, application of digital health including artificial intelligence, clinical decision support, and remote patient monitoring, and pragmatic clinical trials to transform health and healthcare for acutely ill patients. Specifically, our group is dedicated to optimizing the safe use of nephrotoxins, the delivery of nephroprotective medications in patients with or recovering from acute illness, and the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of medications processed by the kidney. We use a variety of methods including modeling and simulation, epidemiology, mixed-methods, implementation science, and clinical trials to answer highly relevant questions that transform care. This position is ideally suited for a PharmD, MD, MBBS, DO, or PhD scientist with research experience who is enthusiastic about working on a multidisciplinary collaborative team to make renally-active medications safer and more effective. Our alumni have gone on to successful careers in academia, clinical medicine, and industry.
Research Focus & Responsibilities
It is expected that the successful candidate will:
- Extract, clean, and analyze electronic health record data to discover gaps in care related to renally-active medication safety and effectiveness and develop models to predict patients at risk for these gaps in care.
Support clinical trials including securing regulatory approval to perform human subjects research from relevant review committees/agencies, develop standard operating procedures that demonstrate knowledge of acute care healthcare delivery, test trial infrastructure, screen for eligibility and obtain consent, and monitor and manage trial data.
- Contribute to grant applications, manuscript preparation, and presentations at scientific meetings.
- Mentor graduate students and research staff in human subjects’ research, experimental design, and data analysis.
- Engage in collaborative projects across the Mayo Clinic enterprise with our multidisciplinary, interprofessional team including individuals in the world-renowned Divisions of Nephrology and Hypertension, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and the Knowledge and Evaluation Research Unit.
Training & Career Development
The fellow will benefit from a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment with opportunities to:
- Gain exposure to clinically relevant human subjects research that is well positioned to transform care
- Refine skills in experimental design, study conduct, and receive structured mentorship in grant writing, scientific communication, and career planning.
- Participate in professional development workshops, networking events, and training programs at Mayo Clinic. Didactic coursework in ethical conduct of research, epidemiology, biostatistics, or specific methodological techniques relevant to the research will complement the applied research experience, where necessary and appropriate for the individual’s career development plan.
- Prepare for an independent academic or industry career in clinical medicine, pharmacy or pharmacology, epidemiology, or health services research.
- Structured mentorship tailored to your career goals, with opportunities to lead projects, publish, and apply for independent funding.
- Opportunities to present at scientific meetings pending available research funding
Environment & Resources
The fellow will have access to state-of-the-art clinical research infrastructure. Our team includes a diverse group of clinicians, scientists, and engineers, providing unique opportunities for innovation and translation.
