Position Summary: Provides clinical and administrative leadership and is responsible for the management of the assigned nursing division. The Director of Nursing is accountable for the management of patient care, human, fiscal and material resources and the total environment of the nursing unit. Essential Functions: Provides direction and leadership in the delivery of nursing care. A. Assumes a leadership role in staffing and scheduling of personnel, considering appropriate utilization of personnel, scope of practice, competencies, patient needs and complexity of care. B. Supports a professional practice environment which fosters excellence in nursing practice. C. Makes patient and staff rounds. D. Fosters professional nurse empowered decision‐making, accountability and autonomy in nursing practice. E. Acts as a resource regarding clinical, administrative aspects of patient care, collaborating with the Vice President Nursing when indicated. F. Provides mentoring, coaching and counseling to staff. G. Is a clinical expert. H. Demonstrates responsibility for achieving goals and desired outcomes. J. Establishes collaborative relationship with Clinical Coordinators, meeting on a regular basis to review goals, needs, and expectations for managing the unit on a 24/7 basis. K. Establishes a collaborative relationship with the Nursing Educator and works as a partner for staff orientation, in‐service and continuing education. Jointly identifies staff development needs and develop a plan for improvement. Jointly establishes competencies for the department and monitors achievement. L. Recognizes and attracts high potential talent. Sets and clarifies performance expectations with employees and promotes ongoing feedback on a regular basis. Completes performance appraisals on time 100% of the time, follows through on action plans and returns to the Human Resources Department on time. M. Constructively and consistently deals with inappropriate employee behavior or actions in a direct and confidential manner that maintains the employee’s self‐esteem. Documents expectations and corrective actions. N. Supports any environment that achieves employee satisfaction. Participates in risk management and crisis intervention. A. Acts as liaison to patients and/or families in times of crisis. B. Responds and assumes appropriate role in emergency codes/crisis intervention. C. Follows through with incidents, through investigation D. Addresses Employee Health incidents appropriately. E. Demonstrates knowledge of NYSDOH and JCAHO requirements and standards insuring compliance in areas of responsibility. F. Confers with Vice President, Employee & Labor Relations Director regarding employee conduct. Actively strives for patient satisfaction. A. Communicates with patient, family and healthcare providers regarding patient care, demonstrating strong communication skills. Makes patient rounds throughout shift. B. Serves as an advocate for patients and family in the clinical management of care. C. Effectively promotes and demonstrates ability in service‐recovery. D. Participates in employee recognition initiative. Fulfills professional role expectations and requirements. A. Demonstrates knowledge and makes appropriate interpretation of nursing, medical and administrative policies and procedures. B. Provides, maintains and coordinates effective communication between nursing and all other departments. C. Maintains confidentiality while serving as a professional liaison with the community. D. Functions as a mentor for development of nursing staff, encouraging professional growth. E. Participates in professional continuing education programs. F. Participates and assumes responsibilities on nursing committees, performance improvement initiatives. G. Meets all JCAHO and NYS requirements in medication management and demonstrates yearly competency with Pharmacy. H. Demonstrates knowledge of JCAHO Standards and responsibility in compliance. I. Demonstrates knowledge of scheduling and maintaining accurate records. J. Process the payroll in KRONOS for all departments as requested. Demonstrates the ability to be a person of influence when relating to our patients, family, staff, physicians and all other customers. A. Provides leadership for the integration of clinical pathways and/or practice guidelines. B. Creates a work environment that enhances both employee and patient satisfaction. C. Exemplifies individual responsibility, accountability and recognition for standards and staff expectations. D. Maintains availability and visibility on his/her units E.
