About the Team
SmartThings is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Device Architecture Cloud (DArC) team. The DArC team develops the core APIs used by all devices on our platform to control, react to, onboard, and list devices. Key Responsibilities
This position is a hybrid role, based onsite 3 days a week at our office in Minneapolis, MN.In this role, your primary responsibilities will include the following:
- Comfortable working in all phases of the software development lifecycle from planning to deployment and support.
- Implementing microservices surrounding devices, the device's last known state, and their events.
- Expected to be attentive to devices, event volume and user requests (~250M /hr) as well as help implement corrective measures for scalability, reliability and performance.
- Abstracting the basic building blocks of a device into reusable pieces on the platform.
- Facilitating the many ways a device can be incorporated into a user account.
- Maintaining the communication between the device and the SmartThings platform.
- Project ownership, working with managers to scope and define assignments, and other project criteria.
- Drive key strategic outcomes like reliability, quality, and testability.
- Willingness to work across various time zones and geographies.
- Mentor other team members.

What You Bring On Day One (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
- 8+ years of experience demonstrating proficiency in Java, Kotlin, object-oriented design, and/or C-based/inspired programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, C++, Rust, etc.
- Exposure to modern non-blocking/asynchronous server frameworks like Micronaut, Spring Boot, Node.js, Spring WebFlux, etc.
- Comfortable developing and understanding an existing codebase in order to implement new features.
- Experience with microservice architecture and service-to-service interconnectability.
- Experience with Linux systems.
- Experience in developing RESTful APIs.
- Experience operating production services in a cloud-based environment like AWS or GCP.
- Ability to lead projects that are not fully defined and influence direction as appropriate.
- Ability to operate in fast-paced, deadline driven, collaborative and iterative programming environment.
- Strong communication and people skills. Comfortable presenting to both internal and external executive audiences.
- Generally identifies as a hard working, light hearted, growth mindset individual.
