About the role

Housing and Residence Life’s mission and goal is to assure healthy, safe, clean and comfortable environments in the university residence halls. The Custodian Lead Tech serves as a working lead custodian staff member by providing professional housekeeping duties in a fast-paced housing program designed to accommodate approximately 3,600 resident-students. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Housing Facilities and assists with the on-boarding, detailed training, reviews the work of custodial staff and provides corrective actions. The Custodian Lead Tech keeps their supervisor abreast on on-going basis, by providing frequent updates and making recommendations for improvement. All cleaning is done at the APPA Standard, Level 2.

The Custodian team works long hours during the summer months.   

Custodial Tasks
Performs routine custodial tasks such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, extracting, blowing, removing trash, cleaning stairs, washing walls and baseboards, cleaning windows and window coverings, cleaning and polishing mirrors, removing spiderwebs, cleaning up spills, appliances and furniture. Moves sofas, chairs, tables, desks, mattresses, appliances and beds to accomplish cleaning tasks. Safely operates all vehicles and other job-related equipment. Shampoos carpets and upholstery in suites, apartments, hallways, lobbies, community spaces, study rooms, kitchenettes/kitchens, and offices within residential halls. Cleans bathroom showers, tubs, stalls, toilets, glass, mirrors, sinks, vent covers, and walls using provided chemicals, materials and equipment; restocks restrooms with all necessary materials and products.

Coordination and Leadership
Assists with the on-boarding, detailed training, reviews the work of custodial staff and provides corrective actions. Keeps supervisor abreast on an ongoing basis, by providing frequent updates and making recommendations for improvement. Will assist with the coordination, scheduling and leading of the summer work. Serves as a role model to the Custodial team by displaying professionalism and adhering to the University of Tennessee policies, procedures, as well as departmental expectations.

Reporting and Handling Materials
Basic computer skills required to check emails, take required University trainings, submit work request/work orders. Utilize University software to record daily working hours, request time off, access personal data. Reports problems, incidents, damage or building repairs needed and as directed by supervisors. Properly handles and disposes of recycling materials and follows instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.


Customer Service
Provides quality customer service to residents and staff. Ensure rooms are set up for special events and restore rooms to prior conditions afterwards.

Additional Duties
Performs additional duties as assigned and/or required to meet Housing & Residential Life and University goals and objectives.

The ideal candidate will possess the following: 
•    Ability to lift up to50 lbs., bend, twist, pull, reach, climb stairs and ladders.
•    Communicate effectively and professionally in the workplace.
•    Prior cleaning experience or the willingness to learn.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and 8 months to 1 year of custodial experience in a commercial or institutional setting. In accordance with the University of Tennessee Safety Policy, a valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Vocational or technical training and 1 to 3 years of custodial experience in a commercial or institutional setting. Bilingual in Spanish and English language- fluent in speaking and writing.
