About the role

Grand Rapids Community College is approved by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and Michigan Sheriffs Coordinator and Training Council (MSCTC) as a Pre-service Basic Training Program (PBTP). These programs prepare entry-level individuals with the cognitive and physical skills needed to sit for the Michigan Licensing exam.

The Police and Corrections Academy Director has the decision making and oversight for the day-to-day administration for the Corrections, Police Academies and customized training programs, academy student and adjunct recruitment, MCOLES testing, and accreditation for both academies. The Director reports to the Dean of the School of Business & Industry and works closely with the Criminal Justice Department Head. This position will also be assigned the ongoing responsibility to explore and develop for recommendation, college financial support, and implementation of new modalities for academy delivery, new training delivery locations. The director will lead the visioning, design, data analysis, assessment and implementation processes for program expansion and redesign with internal and external stakeholders to meet student and community needs.

Primary duties and responsibilities include the oversight and assessment of the effectiveness of the academy programs, ensure policies and practices are established and monitored, (especially related to “high risk” courses such as firearms, driving and tactical), and daily coordination with department leaders, faculty, Admissions and Enrollment, Financial Aid, Academic Advising and Workforce Training. These duties include academy annual budget planning and oversight, course scheduling, curriculum updates, conducting external advisory board meetings, accreditation reports and monitoring visits, planning, adjunct recruitment staffing, monitoring program outcomes and student applications, and reporting approved program activity to Grand Rapids Community College and MCOLES/MSCTC. This position will also research, identify, facilitate, purchase and recommend a variety of new equipment and technologies to increase student readiness for employment.

Additional duties include coordination and outreach activities, such as Criminal Justice week activities, open houses, MCOLES events and hosting events to bring new policing and correction practices to those already working in the field. This position is also responsible for budget management, expanded data collection, analysis and reporting to accreditation, State and Federal agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees and assesses the complex day-to-day activities for the academies and for current and future academies, academy class locations, delivery modes, training centers, and advanced technology
  • Leader and continue to explore with Grand Rapids and local West Michigan municipalities the opportunities to meet community needs through expanded program offerings, academic design, customized training, and facility and training spaces (GRCC Public Safety Center) with college administration involvement and community partner stakeholders
  • Lead the visioning, design and implementation of new or updated curriculum for the academies and additional training opportunities for corrections and policing professionals. Continually assessing the impact on student success, the community and employers
  • Responsible for program budget, request, revenue opportunities and oversight
  • Monitoring regularly and making decisions that ensure program compliance, and sound administration of all academies
  • Assures compliance and leads work on policies and practices to ensure alignment with MCOLES/MSCTC standards and GRCC policies, practices, and procedures. Reviews and actively liaisons with campus leaders and department heads on processes, policy and practice changes for the academies
  • Ensures that student records for basic training programs are complete, current, and available as required by MCOLES/MSCTC
  • Ensures the courses required by MCOLES/MSCTC incorporate the training objectives and hours established by MCOLES/MSCTC
