Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the teachers in the classroom, engaging and interacting with the children while utilizing developmentally appropriate practice and positive guidance strategies, assisting the children in their interactions with other children, assisting with handwashing, helping children go to sleep, assisting with curriculum and the implementation of activities in the classroom, cleaning duties, adhering to the safety rules of the center, helping prepare meals/snacks/bottles and other duties as needed/ assigned.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the implementation of all the daily activities of the program utilizing developmentally appropriate practice to promote the development of the whole child.
- Provide a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for children enrolled in the program.
- Be a role model for Developmentally Appropriate Practice for teacher-child interaction (for interns and lab students) in the implementation of the daily operation of the program.
- Able to articulate program goals and philosophy and apply them to working with the children and other adults working in the program.
- Participate in planning and implementing daily activities.
- Interact with the children and encourage their involvement in activities.
- Manage children’s behavior using positive guidance techniques and limit setting.
- Assist in hand washing, serving meals, diapering, toileting, and naptime as assigned.
- Work with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
- Establish positive and productive relationships and communicate effectively with families.
- Maintain confidentiality of children and families.
- Assist with taking notes for child assessments and developmental evaluations.
- Attend on-going staff development trainings and staff meetings.
- Follow State health and safety guidelines and licensing regulations.
- Cleaning responsibilities: maintenance of order and neatness in kitchen, storage room, observation room, and all classroom and outdoor areas; sanitize toys and equipment daily Report any suspected case of child abuse or neglect to CPS.
- Student Assistant will perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Director or Master Teacher(s).
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
- Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
- Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.
- As a Bridge Student Assistant, the student need not be registered as a student, but must have been enrolled as a CSU student the previous term and is registered for the following term.
Required Qualifications
- Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
- Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
- International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledgeable about developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood
- Eager to learn about creating optimal caregiving environments for young children and willing Continually increase knowledge in the field of Early Childhood Education
- Warm and sensitive toward the children
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Friendly, helpful, and professional attitude
- Highly responsible, dependable, flexible, and punctual
- Experience working with young children preferred
- Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification preferred
Special Conditions
- Must be enrolled in a B.A. program in Child Development or related field
- Must have had an undergraduate course in Infant-Toddler Development (CD2250) and be Enrolled in 4 units a quarter until 12 units of Child Development core courses are completed
- Fingerprinting clearance prior to employment
Compensation and Benefits:
Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.00 per hour.
The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (7:30 am – 5:30 pm).
