About the opportunity

Based out of the Charles Perkins Centre, the Technical Assistant supports the delivery of timely and effective technical services within the responsible area to achieve enhanced education/research facilities support outcomes. The role’s key activities include maintaining the technical facility in a clean and tidy state, operating equipment, disposing of technical waste, maintaining stock levels of supplies, and administrative tasks such as performing inventory stock takes, labelling, record-keeping, receiving and unpacking goods, etc. This role also assists Technical Officers with setting up of classes/demonstrations/research, maintaining and calibrating equipment, preparing reagents and consumables, writing safety/procedural documentation, and conducting investigative tasks under guidance.

The Technical Assistant is customer service-focused and provides efficient routine support services to technical facility educators and research facilities in line with service targets. The Technical Assistant may liaise with personnel from other Professional Services Units to ensure delivery of enabling services that support the maintenance and functioning of the work area.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • deliver effective and timely technical services in responsibility area in line with established protocols/ procedures under the general supervision of senior technical staff
  • provide technical and administrative support the responsibility area under the general supervision of senior technical staff
  • support the implementation of service improvements and service excellence within the responsibility area
  • contribute to a positive, professional, customer-focused team culture
  • maintain inventory databases and regularly perform stocktaking for equipment, consumables, hazardous materials, and samples
  • champion best practices, workplace health and safety, compliance, and risk management 
  • assist in responding to emergencies, alarms, and equipment/ instrument failures, as directed
  • provide project support as required, collaborating with other TSS, PSU or central project managers/teams as required. 

About you:

  • diploma level qualification, Certificate III-IV, or Laboratory Technician Certificate with relevant work experience in an applicable field, and/or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  • experience preparing, set up/pack down of higher educational laboratory classes or common laboratory equipment
  • relevant experience in any front-line service environment interacting with customers or clients
  • ability to work in accordance with safety regulations and operating procedures within a technical environment
  • experience or training working in accordance with safety regulations within a technical environment
  • ability to contribute to the development and maintenance and review of standard technical documentation and operating procedures
  • an ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • a willingness to undertake relevant training/ courses, if required.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
