Summary:
The House Supervisor at Robert Packer Hospital provides oversight for the hospital in the absence of department managers. They represent the Hospital Administration and leadership supporting the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization. The House Supervisor provides the leadership for the safe care of the patients, visitors, and staff. This includes patient throughput and placement, crisis management, staffing/scheduling, and emergency situational management. The House Supervisor reports to the Manager of the Staffing and Scheduling Operations.
Experience:
- A minimum of five years RN experience required
- Previously demonstrated leadership and effective communication required
- Experience in a high acuity setting with strong clinical judgement, critical thinking skills and attention to detail
Education:
BSN - Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred.
Licenses:
RN-PA - State of Pennsylvania Registered Nursing License
BLS - Basic Life Support required. ACLS - Advanced Life Support preferred.
Certification preferred.
Essential Functions:
- Provide leadership to promote safe, effective, and efficient care according to best practice.
- Act as the established contact and resource for hospital employees or other external persons. Act as a consultant regarding clinical, administrative, emergency, or legal aspects of patient care. Confer with the administrative person /s on call when necessary.
- Assume administrative responsibilities in the absence of Hospital administration and leadership members.
- Participate in risk management and crisis intervention by acting as a liaison to patients and / or families in times of crisis. Respond and assume appropriate role in emergency codes.
- Oversee and assist with the placement of patients using the right patient, right unit methodology
- Enforce regulatory compliance using hospital, state, and federal guidelines
- Provide support and be a resource especially for emergency and confrontational situations
- Foster professional nurse empowered decision-making, accountability, and autonomy in nursing practices
- Represent the organization in a professional, courteous manner to patients, families, co-workers, and other health care team members. Be sensitive to how verbal and non-verbal communication is perceived. Always maintain confidentiality in compliance with HIPPA.

- Provide detailed handoff to oncoming House Supervisor
- Deliver updates to Administration, leaders and managers on situations or events to ensure appropriate follow-up
- Escalate situations to the appropriate leader for direction, support and backup as needed
- Provide conflict management techniques in emotionally charged situations to de-escalate, prevent increased escalation and potential harm
- Complete all required documentation needed for validation, improvement, and data collection
- Ensure completion of the death certificate process for patients expiring at RPH.
- Promote patient satisfaction
- Serve as an advocate for the patient in difficult situations and in the clinical management of their care
- Prioritize and expedite all communications in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Perform service recovery as needed
- Be visible to the patients and their families
- Initiate and lead staffing for the inpatient units
- Continually review and compare census / acuity levels on patient units to staffing. Ensure staffing level is appropriate. Adjust to patient needs and budgetary constraints as necessary.
