DATABASE PERFORMANCE & MONITORING EXPERT

 Remote Role – U.S. or Canada

 

OVERVIEW

The Altera proactive operations team is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual for database performance monitoring (includes design, implement, upgrade and optimization tools to improve the performance of databases required to operate our software solutions) .

You’ll work closely with business unit leaders, our hosting leadership team, Altera IT, partners, and vendors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lifecycle management of SQL Performance Monitoring Tool (Identification, Implementation, tuning and alert development/ end to end operationalization of the monitoring tool)
  • Lead database monitoring and continuous improvement projects. Implement best practices for monitoring, and automated problem management solutions.
  • Monitor performance via measurement and capacity planning of production software solutions, recommending changes to products and “standardized” system configurations.
  • Script database automation and reporting with PowerShell or assigned tool.
  • Help improve tooling and process capabilities including:
    • Increased automation
    • Better functionality
    • Better integration with other tools
    • Increased business analytics

Contribute to team synergy

  • Coach, and mentor junior team members and provide team leadership 
  • Document issues with resolutions and share with team members 
  • Knowledge transfer with other team members to improve overall team education
  • Own your assigned tasks and timely inform the progress of the project / task to all
  • Actively participate in our project meetings and make valuable contributions

 ACADEMIC & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Post-graduation qualifications or technical certifications
  • Certified Microsoft DBA preferred.

Work Experience

  • Experienced in database/application/infrastructure monitoring tools/solutions: (SentryOne/AppDynamics/Nagios/SQL Monitor or other SQL performance management tools)
  • 7+ years’ experience troubleshooting SQL server issues such as Always On, Failover cluster manager, performance troubleshooting, SQL server agent jobs, replication etc.
  • T SQL script writing basic knowledge; able to analyze the stored procedure and T SQL code and troubleshoot technical issues from a system / application perspective.
  • Knowledge of active directory plus basic networking knowledge and SQL server backup and recovery strategies preferred.
  • Strong problem management and development management skills
  • Able to measure, understand, and identify new success criteria in proactive services capabilities.
  • Experienced in Windows servers infrastructure and .Net based application support:
    • IIS, worker process thread, Web config, Certificate binding
    • Event Logs
    • Server Performance metrics - CPU, Memory, Queue length, MSMQ, I/O, Page writes
    • Perfmon
    • Windows cluster
    • COM+
    • Log Parser
  • Able to juggle multiple projects and tasks; demonstrated knowledge of project management concepts and techniques
  • Experienced with ITSM tools such as Service desk/ServiceNow.
  • Knowledge of ITIL framework
  • Experienced in office applications - Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Access
  • Strong verbal and written communications skill set.

WORK ARRANGEMENTS

  • Remote role. Candidates may live anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada.
  • May require after-hours, on-call support and/or holidays.

Occasional travel required for business needs. (Up to 10%)
