Working cooperatively with the United States Forest Service Stanislaus National Forest, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting to hire 1 experienced Engineer. The overarching objective of this position is to assist the Stanislaus National Forest Engineering Department in activities to support the transportation and facilities engineering program of work. The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Analyzes various civil engineering problems and provides advice and consultation around transportation and facilities. Utilizes various forms of computer hardware and software to develop skills and accomplish assigned tasks such as making, evaluating, and documenting design decisions and producing documents. Updates and maintains various databases.
  • Provides engineering input into the interdisciplinary planning process for natural resource development activities involving transportation or facilities. Assists in the preparation of reports for environmental analyses.
  • Performs all associated duties involved in the contract administration duties for an entire project of limited size or complexity or a minor part of a large project. Supervises construction operations for compliance with design and specifications; interprets plans and specifications; and confers with contractor representatives to resolve differences of opinion.
  • Conducts preliminary surveys and site investigations to obtain baseline and field data on soils, topography, drainage, existing structures and utilities, and feasible layout of proposed roads, facilities or structures in relation to terrain.
  • Prepares completed road designs involving drainage structures, base and surfacing analysis using basic survey data. Computes quantities and makes cost estimates based on cost data and knowledge of project terrain. Prepares cost estimates to determine most economical design to meet multiple use needs and construction feasibility. Develops construction specifications to ensure the proper use of materials and appropriate application of construction processes.  Develops specifications to complement and clarify the content and intent of drawings. Makes on-the-ground investigations to ensure accuracy and suitability of final design prior to submission of plans for approval. Works with associated engineering and other specialists during the design phase to assist in integrating design features on projects.
  • Makes field inspections of problems or questionable areas indicated by field notes to obtain information for clarification.  Makes inspections and evaluation of the conditions of facilities and structures to insure accuracy, existing standards, codes, regulations and requirements, and suitability of final design.
  • Develops programs for maintenance of roads and facilities, including determining need for, feasibility of, and extent of work required; develops project proposals to obtain budget approval; prepares designs or specifications; and accomplishes repair and modification work.

The Stanislaus National Forest spans nearly 900,000 acres on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada in California. With elevations ranging from 1,500 to 11,000 feet, the forest features diverse landscapes, from dense woodlands to alpine meadows. Nestled between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, it offers abundant recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, fishing, and skiing. Its proximity to major urban areas makes it a prime destination, with the San Francisco Bay Area located just 3 hours west.

 

WORK SCHEDULE

Projects begin as early as March and end as late as November. Season schedules are project specific. 

Most Engineering positions follow 10 hour days, 4 days a week schedule.
