About the Transmission and Distribution Maintenance Planning (TDMP) Team
The goal of the Transmission and Distribution Maintenance Planning (TDMP) team at SMUD is to develop projects and programs that ensure SMUD's compliance with federal & state regulations by preparing maintenance & inspection programs to be targeted and effective to achieve Board's Strategic Directives on Safety, Reliability, and Competitive Rates. The TDMP team is responsible for the development of yearly Operation & Maintenance (O&M) and Capital plans for all SMUD-owned service area substations and transmission & distribution lines.
About the TDMP Electrical Engineering Intern Position
The TDMP Electrical Engineering Intern will complete projects and tasks including, but not limited to:
- Assisting the engineering staff to identify cable replacement and injection projects
- Utilizing multiple software applications and databases to determine best locations for cable replacement
- Extracting data from GIS systems using complex queries and traces for further analysis
- Interpreting one-line diagrams, preparing equipment lists, and validating existing data
- Performing queries and outputting work lists from SAP
- Preparing cable replacement job packages
- Working in other aspects of maintenance planning including substation and transmission maintenance planning
- Verifying and comparing data between two data sets
The TDMP Electrical Engineering Intern will have the opportunity to work on a variety of engineering related assignments ranging from simple tasks (e.g. data gathering in a spreadsheet) to complex tasks (e.g. utilizing multiple software tools).
Under direction of a graduate engineer or scientist, performs assignments of limited scope and duration that call for application of a reasonable range of scientific and mathematical fundamentals acquired in an approved professional engineering or physical science curriculum.

Purpose
Under staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in alignment with their educational disciplines.
Nature and Scope
The work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills. Work is closely related to the employee's academic major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work may include, but is not limited to, the following: (NOTE: While in general all the functions and requirements listed are essential, individual positions and/or locations may not require all duties be performed.)
- Performs tasks of an analytical or research nature for suitable projects or ongoing assignments which call for specific acquired academic skills and knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math.
- May locate sources of information; collect and organize data.
- Makes computations and analyzes data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action.
- May develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs.
- May develop written, graphical and/or oral reports.
- May assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision.
Required Education
Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at an accredited college or university in a declared curriculum with a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) emphasis that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments.
