About the role

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, a division of the University of Virginia located in Wise, Virginia, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Hospitality and Finance. The position is a full-time, 9-month commitment at the assistant professor level with a start date of August 2024. The position is housed within the Department of Business and Economics.

The Department of Business and Economics is at a critical juncture with recent investments from the General Assembly to create an interdisciplinary program in Hospitality and Tourism Management that aligns with regional economic development efforts, particularly new investments by Hard Rock Corporation to build an entertainment district in Bristol, Virginia around a casino that opened in summer 2022 and a full-scale resort slated for opening in 2024.

This position in Hospitality Finance is new at UVA Wise, offering an opportunity for someone who is innovative and entrepreneurial to develop new courses related to the growing hospitality finance and real estate sectors. We seek a person who is willing to work with business and industry partners in the hospitality/tourism/event management/real estate sectors to create internships and other experiential learning opportunities for students.

Duties include creating and teaching undergraduate courses at both the introductory and advanced levels; serving the department and college on various committees; advising students; pursuing ongoing scholarly activity preferably in conjunction with undergraduate students; and assisting the department chair and other faculty with assessment, support marketing activities for the newly developed program, and other duties as needed.

Successful candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; must have a Ph.D. (advanced ABD candidates will be considered) in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Finance, Business Administration or a related field; and have the demonstrated ability for engaged and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level.

The successful candidate will also possess explicit interest in student-centered and experiential learning and integrating the liberal arts curriculum within the Department’s professional education.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in hospitality and tourism management, finance, real estate, and related subjects. The successful candidate will teach a 4-4 load of courses such as in hospitality and tourism management, principles of finance, and real estate.
  • Conduct research suitable for the department of business and economics at UVA-Wise.
  • Mentor and advise students, supporting their academic and career development.
  • Promote the hospitality and tourism program to local students and organizations.
  • Engage in service activities within the department and university community.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited university is required.

Candidates should have completed at least 18 graduate credit hours in the following areas: Hospitality and Tourism Management, Finance, Real Estate, Economics, or Accounting.

Holding Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1 designation or a current license in Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or in related to Real Estate, or possessing 3 years of experience in Hospitality and Tourism Management beyond entry-level positions, is a plus.

Expertise in teaching casino management is also considered a valuable asset.
