About the team
The Operate product engineering team focuses on improving our customers’ day-to-day operations. We build features to help our customers’ employees make human review decisions about how much of a risk their consumer and business accounts pose and then take action on those decisions.
For example, when a person applies for a new credit card from a bank that’s a customer of Alloy, Alloy runs the bank’s automated rules which lead to three outcomes: auto-decline xor auto-approve xor human review. In a review, the bank’s employee looks at the automated rules’ results, relevant context (e.g. was there a surge this week in applications with very similar personally identifiable information or was this person’s long-dormant account suddenly receiving hundreds of small transactions), and may also ask the person directly for more info. All that info goes into deciding what should ultimately happen with the person’s credit card application and overall account.
The Operate team works to improve these reviews for our customers’ employees, making sure they’re presented with relevant understandable data and context and that they’re able to take useful actions such as
- Freeze hijacked bank accounts until the rightful owners can regain control.
- Release funds for unusual transactions once deemed safe and correct.
- Protect from fraud ring attacks by triaging, escalating, and resolving alerts.
- Reporting financial suspicious activity to governments.
These capabilities and more that the Operate team supports are critical to Alloy—they directly affect the balance of protecting our customers from losses from fraud or compliance penalties while increasing how many legitimate consumers and businesses can buy and benefit from our customers’ financial products.
The team consists of 8 engineers (mid-level and senior) as well as a PM, designer, and EM. Like all engineering teams at Alloy, we work all across the Alloy codebase and product and regularly collaborate with other engineering squads and with folks beyond engineering too.
Alloy operates in a hybrid-work environment. We look to foster collaboration and community by having our local employees onsite twice a week, and remote employees onsite once a quarter.
What you'll be doing
- Crafting straightforward, typed, tested code that’s reliable, extensible, and scalable.
- Architecting, building, launching, and supporting customer-facing fullstack features and systems.
- Leading small teams of engineers for larger projects and work individually on smaller ones.
- Coalescing Alloy’s product vision from PMs and UX designers into concrete technical plans then share and review those plans with other engineers.
- Providing technical mentorship and guidance to fellow engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth within our expanding team and within our cross-engineering guilds such as the observability guild, architecture guild or security guild.
- Embracing an iterative customer-centric approach, flexibly iterating on features based on feedback from internal and external customers.
- Using modern software tools and advocate for new ones when appropriate. Our tech stack is primarily TypeScript: Node.js, React, Redux, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Redshift and other AWS products, Storybook for our in-house UI component library, and rarely some legacy Python/Django.
- Being on-call for a week once every few months (after a reasonable ramp-up period).
In summary, you will play a pivotal role in driving our product development efforts forward, leveraging your technical expertise and leadership skills to
