About the Role


The Breakthrough Technologies team is looking for a Director passionate about creating a sustainable future, with demonstrated superior knowledge in driving strategy and execution related to breakthrough technologies with application to HVAC systems, and with experience in creating and expanding technical teams and technical capabilities and facilities.

This role will be based in Syracuse, NY and will report to the Carrier Global Director of Breakthrough Technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Lay out the strategy for expanding the Breakthrough Technologies team footprint in Syracuse.

  • Lead the strategic prioritization, creation and execution for projects related to dehumidification, carbon capture platforms, with expected expanded responsibilities to coordinate local activities related to developing and testing breakthrough HVAC system solutions is expected.

  • Define priorities and project objectives and KPIs in an agile and fail fast fashion to identify quickly the most promising technologies to TRL5 or full prototype demonstrators.

  • Drive with passion and energy the growth of Breakthrough Technologies at Carrier.

  • Identify and attract top talent to drive the development and execution of breakthrough technology projects.

  • Create project teams with top technical talent, to include members of the central technology engineering organization and local business units, by coordinating with technical and business leaders, fellows, technology architects, safety officers, and external subject matter experts.

  • Manage team goals, development and growth, development of lab capabilities including capital appropriations.

  • Foster collaboration with the Carrier engineering organization and all teams who are instrumental to the success of Breakthrough Technologies.

  • Build advocacy with senior leaders in Carrier Business Units for all new initiatives.

  • Create plans for development and build office space to foster innovation, and laboratory infrastructure including psychometric rooms.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering

  • 10+ years of experience in leading and creating technical teams. Managing technical processes including IP strategies, modeling/simulation/experimentation approaches for the evaluation of technologies, requirements and KPI definition

  • 5 + years of demonstrated ability to mature technologies and systems in agreement with technical readiness processes and transfer the knowledge to a receipting business, ready for product development.

  • 5 + year of experience in disruptive technologies such as independent dehumidification, carbon capture, thermodynamic cycles, new materials for HVAC systems

  • 15% travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or PhD

  • Business knowledge, including drafting contracts with potential partners and government, drive investment decisions, establishing collaborations and oversee work with external partners

  • Experience with HVAC&R systems and laboratory and/or modeling environments

  • Systems engineering and system integration experience.

  • Experience with managing research project portfolios and project management.

  • Experience in creating and maintaining technical laboratories, with preference on psychometric chamber.

  • Safety, sustainability, passion for achievement.

  • Team oriented, quality and respect for people.

  • Ability to lead multi-cultural, multidisciplinary, geographically distributed technology development teams.

  • Familiarity with safety standards and safety risk assessment for products and lab environments.

  • Identify and scout disruptive technologies and methods for technology readiness maturation.

  • Experience with establishing research partnerships with academic and research institutions.
