Summary

Leveraging a strong background in data analytics and statistics coupled with deep agricultural knowledge, the Agricultural Data Scientist performs exploratory analysis, develops elegant and impactful data visualizations, contributes to data pipeline development, and implements machine learning algorithms to drive a positive value proposition for business stakeholders. Additionally, duties will extend to in-field data collection, trial/experiment design and execution, efforts to continually improve agricultural domain knowledge, and communicating progress and results to stakeholders and senior leadership. This work focuses on varying types of complex business challenges related to farming, agronomy, and plant science research. This is a multi-disciplinary role spanning Information Technology (IT), data science, software development, data engineering, agronomy, precision agriculture, logistics, and requires significant collaboration with business stakeholders, IT resources, 3rd-party vendors etc.

Key Responsibilities

• Independently leads and/or assists with conducting data discovery to identify and capture the lifecycle of data assets, as well as source-to-target data mapping. Partners with the business to define requirements and assist with designing data origination and data maintenance workflows and service levels. Designs processes with IT and business stakeholders to capture and resolve data issues in a timely manner.
• Periodically assesses the effectiveness of data origination, maintenance and issue management processes, and present recommendations for improvement.
• Drives and/or participates in data pipeline development, deployment, and maintenance activities leveraging tools including Python, SQL, Databricks, Azure DevOps, and Azure Data Factory.
• Applies data science techniques to solve complex business challenges, improve efficiencies, and lead to positive return-on-investment outcomes.
• Develop relationships with business stakeholders across the company to create a positive culture around the use of data and analytics to enhance operations and outcomes.
• Ensures information security policies and standards are understood and followed.

Typical Education

Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4-year college or university

Relevant Experience

5+ years related experience and/or training

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, or Computer Science with a significant and strong agriculture background.
• Must have prior experience with a strong understanding of the following:
  • Python programming language
  • SQL
  • Spatiotemporal analysis
  • Remote sensing data
  • Computer Vision
  • The Azure cloud platform and associated tools including Databricks, Apache Spark, Azure Data Factory, etc.
  • Cropping systems and practices
  • GIS & GPS technologies
  • Farming equipment and control systems
  • Strong analytics and presentation skill sets
  • Ability to work across all levels of an organization
