Under the general supervision of a Laboratory Technologist or other degree clinical laboratory specialist conducts a variety of simple and moderately complex tests and procedures, using applied technologies and protocols established for the clinical laboratory; may assist in directing the activities of Medical Laboratory Technicians II and providing technical back-up to Medical Technologists in the performance of more difficult technical tests and work methods.

Typical Duties
  • Assists or relieves degree laboratory personnel in a wide variety of clinical procedure and health screening protocols for the laboratory.
  • May instruct or coordinate the activities of Medial Laboratory Technicians I and II, Laboratory Aides, phlebotomy dispatchers, as directed by a Technologist.
  • Applies a broad range of technical knowledge in the specific application of test procedures and understands the specialized work methods of a particular clinical area.
  • Is familiar with safety and other standards of regulatory agencies and may ensure that such standards are followed in a particular work area where the immediate or constant presence of a Technologist is absent.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in performing laboratory tests such as blood chemical analysis or allergy tests; assays body aspirates for chemical or microbiological analysis; performs hemoglobin, hematocrit, and Differentials on blood specimens; conducts a wide variety of tests in the areas of hematology, serology, and parasitology.
  • Prepares specimens for microscopic analysis and examination, which involves the use of firing and staining techniques. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment as required.
  • Maintains accurate logs, records, computer data files, etc., subject to review and approval by a Laboratory Technologist.
  • May be required to assure duties and perform a wide range of tests to those conducted by a Medical Technologist I, but is not required to have the same academic, theoretical, and professional judgement or primary responsibility as is mandated for the Medical Technologist.

CORE Center Laboratories
  • Performs phlebotomy as required. May be assigned to satellite phlebotomy/workstations within the CORE Center as needed (e.g., Screening Clinic).
  • May perform laboratory procedures related to blood drawing and blood banking, such as, pre-transfusion, hepatitis/HIV testing, preparation, processing of specimens and serving of blood donors/recipients.


M inimum Qualifications:
  • Must quality as a Medical Laboratory Technician under the Illinois Laboratories Code (MUST PROVIDE PROOF AT TIME OF INTERVIEW)
  • One (1) year of clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician (is required)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional education, training, experience, or certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by ACP, WERE or equivalent may be preferred or considered essential to area of assignment
  • An equivalent combination of professionally sanctioned, recognized, or accredited training and work experience in the fields of Cytotechnology and/or Histology may be acceptable, in accordance with level of assignment, job requirements and clinical standards; Certification by ACP, WERE or equivalent as a Cytotechnician, Cytotechnologist, Histologist or related clinical specialist may be preferred or considered essential to area of assignment
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Good knowledge of modern laboratory procedures and techniques, ability to organize work efficiently and to aid or instruct other Technicians, Lab Aides or Assistants.
  • Demonstrated or documented ability to function proficiently, accurately, and effectively in the performance of the above stated duties, and in accordance with stablished standards, safety guidelines and other criteria related to Cytology and Histology
  • Conscientious, professional, and courteous behavior to other staff and patients
