The opportunity
The Corporate Casualty Underwriting Director provides corporate underwriting leadership, governance, and portfolio oversight for Casualty business, with emphasis on General Casualty (Commercial General Liability, Umbrella/Excess, Auto, and Workers Compensation), Construction Casualty, and Excess & Surplus (E&S) Casualty. Leads the development and execution of underwriting strategies that support profitable growth, portfolio performance, underwriting discipline, and effective risk management across primary and excess casualty business. Partners with business leaders and key stakeholders to ensure consistent underwriting standards, pricing adequacy, governance, and risk selection while serving as a technical authority on complex casualty exposures. Supports underwriting operations across the U.S. and collaborates with stakeholders in Canada, the UK, and Europe on U.S. written risks. Some of the Corporate Casualty Underwriting Director duties include but are not limited to:
- Leads casualty underwriting strategy, governance, and portfolio management to achieve profitability, growth, and risk appetite objectives.
- Oversees portfolio performance across Construction Casualty, E&S Casualty, Auto, Commercial General Liability, Umbrella, and Workers Compensation, including rate adequacy, attachment points, limits deployment, aggregation management, and severity trends.
- Partners with segment leaders to establish and maintain underwriting guidelines, referral standards, authority frameworks, and exception governance.
- Provides technical direction on complex casualty risks, coverage structures, and emerging exposures, including construction, and excess liability.
- Collaborates with Actuarial, Product, Reinsurance, Claims, Legal, Compliance, and Global Risk Management to support pricing, product development, portfolio analytics, and underwriting effectiveness.
- Monitors industry, legal, regulatory, and market developments and recommends underwriting actions to address emerging risks and opportunities.
- Directs underwriting governance activities including audits, quality reviews, referral management, and compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
- Promotes consistency in underwriting practices through collaboration with domestic and international underwriting partners.
- Leads, develops, and mentors corporate underwriting team while communicating strategic priorities and performance expectations.
The expertise you bring
- Bachelor's degree required.
- CPCU, ARM, MBA, JD, or other relevant professional designations preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of casualty underwriting experience, including significant experience in General Casualty, Construction Casualty and/or E&S Casualty.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience managing and developing underwriting professionals. Strong knowledge of casualty coverage, pricing, portfolio management, and broker distribution.
Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires; however, your recruiter will provide more specific compensation details during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $275,000 - $323,000, based on the factors aforementioned.
