The Department of History at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications and nominations for the Crawford Professor of East Asian History, a full-time tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, specializing in the history of Modern China. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2027. We welcome applications from historians whose research focuses on any aspect of Modern China from the nineteenth century to the present. Scholars working on all thematic areas are encouraged to apply.
Candidates must hold a PhD in History or a closely related field and have an established record of scholarly achievement appropriate for appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Applicants who currently hold the rank of Assistant Professor, or equivalent position, whose scholarly record supports appointment with tenure at the Associate Professor level are encouraged to apply. Candidates should demonstrate substantial engagement with Chinese-language primary sources and scholarship, a record of original research appropriate to the rank sought, and an active research agenda with clear plans for future scholarship. Candidates should have experience teaching Chinese and East Asian history to students from a wide range of backgrounds. They should be prepared to discuss their approaches to teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction in Modern Chinese history and broader East Asian history and will have opportunities to develop courses that complement their research and teaching interests. Candidates should demonstrate a record of service appropriate to their career stage and describe how they would contribute to strengthening Chinese and East Asian studies within the department, across the university, and in the profession.
The successful candidate will join an active interdisciplinary community of historians and scholars of East Asia in the Department of History, the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (CEAPS), the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC), and other units across campus. We seek a colleague who will strengthen this community through research, teaching, mentoring, service, and intellectual collaboration.
