About the role

Requisition Id 12664

Overview:

We are seeking a Mechanical Designer who will focus on conceptualization, design, build, and deployment of Electromagnetic Isotope Separation (EMIS) devices through the creation of sophisticated 3D CAD models and detailed design packages suitable for fabrication.  This position resides in the Plasma Enrichment Deployment & Engineering Group in the Plasma Enrichment Science & Engineering Section, Enrichment Science & Engineering Division, Isotope Science & Engineering Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of enrichment technologies.  ORNL is a recognized leader in centrifuge and electromagnetic enrichment technology.  We are the stewards and dispensary of the nation’s stable isotope inventory and have a legacy dating to the late 1940s.  This division integrates the full enrichment process from chemical synthesis of feed materials through fabrication of the custom physical forms needed to support the user communities.

As part of our team, you will work closely with a focused group of scientists, technicians, and engineers on challenging, fast paced technical projects in support of the DOE Isotope Program.   This has been a quickly expanding program at ORNL and offers significant opportunities for professional growth. The team demonstrates a collective excitement for the important work being accomplished and values creative solutions to developing technology and processes solving the latest challenges. Successful development and deployment of isotope separation technologies requires an acute attention to design detail and continued consideration of personnel and equipment safety.

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. With a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people, ORNL’s decadal vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, design, develop and improve plasma-based enrichment technology related components using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (SolidWorks).
  • Create 2D drawings to be used for fabrication and communicate with staff and suppliers through the fabrication and assembly process.
  • Produce and maintain As-Built documentation for complex systems to maintain configuration control.
  • Ensures drawings and designs are in full compliance with applicable engineering codes as well as environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Direct and participate in the installation, testing and development of designed systems, equipment, and components in collaboration with team members.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A B.S. degree in an engineering or related discipline with 5+ years of mechanical design experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Relevant experience collaborating with other designers, engineers, and scientists in the creation of 3D components, assemblies and prints from ideas, rough sketches, red lines, and notes, as this will be a regular function of the position.
  • Experience using SolidWorks 3D CAD design software.
  • Proven track record of design for Safety, design for Manufacturing and Assembly, and basic knowledge of industry best practices, tools, and technologies.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CAD management using a PDM environment (such as Vault) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with machining and fabrication processes required for complicated and technically challenging components of diverse routine materials and specialty materials such as ceramics, graphites, and refractory metals.
  • Knowledge of welding processes is a plus.
  • Fundamental knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T ASME Y14
