Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

This is a group lead position within the Mechanisms/Arms & Umbilical’s group of COMET Design Engineering. In this position, the selected Engineer will be responsible for the mentoring younger engineers and providing peer review insight as well as the regular functions of design, development, test, and commissioning of Ground Support Equipment (GSE). The selected Engineer will provide technical engineering direction. Work shall include the development of models and drawings, design review presentations, and support for manufacturing and operations. Depending on the project type, this can vary from participating in conceptual design ideas to revisions to existing designs and modifications to existing structures or Ground Support Equipment (GSE). Duties also include preparation of all essential system engineering documentation components required for a complete and viable system. Responsible for planning, cost development, management, and scheduling for assigned projects. Must have ability to successfully interface with client representatives and manage completion of tasks on schedule and within budget to the customer's satisfaction. Duties may also include oversight of systems activations to validate compliance with contract documents. Must be well organized, extremely flexible and capable of juggling multiple priorities simultaneously.

Responsibilities

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

• Use program and project management experience to develop success-oriented schedule, delegate labor resources, in support design completion of critical GSE in support of manned flight for the SLS.
• Create and adjust processes in support of design completion, fabrication, test and checkout of ground support equipment.
•  Possess interpersonal, communication and technical skill to guide the department, develop and maintain good. customer relationships.
•  Review and approve mechanical engineering design output.
• Use engineering knowledge and experience to guide and mentor less experienced mechanical engineers.
•  Able to effectively communicate job expectations, rapidly adapt/respond to changes in tasks and responsibilities.
•  Mentor and inspire members of the team for success.

Qualifications – External

BS degree in Engineering or technical equivalent from an accredited institution; at least 10 years of experience and/or an advanced degree
