The overall focus of the Charles lab is to decrease the global burden of mucosal and enteric infections affecting resource-poor and marginalized populations. More specifically, work in the lab is focused on furthering our understanding of host-pathogen and immune responses during human infection by V. cholerae (the cause of cholera) and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Paratyphi A (the primary cause of enteric fever) and to identify immunogenic antigens or molecular signatures for vaccine and diagnostic assay development. Research in the lab utilizes human patient samples to perform a variety of immunological, functional, and genome-scale assays to address 1) fundamental questions about protective immunity during human infection with S. Typhi or V. cholerae and the novel mechanisms these pathogens utilize to cause infection and 2) to develop rapid diagnostic and seroepidemiologic tools that can be used in resource-limited settings; and 3) improve vaccine strategies.
