POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under immediate supervision and in the capacity of a trainee, the MTAP 9910 Public Service Trainee serves as a Transit Ambassador Trainee to the 9166 Transit Ambassadors. Incumbents are trained to ride on high-incident transit routes near schools and monitor for disruptive activity amongst students and others to deter and diffuse acts of violence and vandalism through the application of conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques. Trainees will also participate in other training as part of the program curriculum over the course of 3 years. Upon successful completion of this trainee program, incumbents will have met the minimum qualifications for the 9166 Transit Ambassador position.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Learns how to maintain a high level of customer service; provides general information and assistance to transit passengers and members of the public.
- Learns how to provide transportation directions to customers, answers service-related questions, and provides service support.
- Routinely rides transit lines
- Learns how to assist with passenger boarding/disembarking; supports youth while on transit or in the transit system.
- Learns de-escalation techniques and how to properly observe and report potential safety hazards and security concerns.
- Learns how to complete basic daily reports regarding unusual incidents, safety and security incidents and other activities.
- Under direct supervision, the Transit Ambassador Trainee attends daily roll call meetings to receive assignments.
- Ride SFMTA vehicles on designated lines at specified times and monitor hot spots.
- Observe, and interact with and provide customer service to operators, the public and others to reduce violence and disruptive behavior on and around SFMTA property.
- Conduct outreach within the community and participate in community violence reduction efforts including presentations at various schools
- Transit Ambassador Trainees also monitor high schools and middle schools throughout the City of San Francisco.
- Transit Ambassador Trainees will be placed at various locations
- Assists the Transit Ambassador in performing public monitoring for special events.
- Distributes materials.
- Attends remedial and/or technical education classes related to work assignments.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 21 years of age AND
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.
- Experience obtained within the last five years working with at-risk youth or other disadvantaged communities.
- Experience obtained within the last five years in customer service.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including having the ability to interact and establish a rapport with students and adolescents that may display disruptive behavior.
- Bilingual; fluent in English and a second language commonly used in San Francisco.
