Summary: 

The Writing and Academic Support Specialist assists students with their writing needs by providing classroom  instruction, tutoring, and individualized writing instruction and with academic support via individual guidance and program development and delivery.  Classroom and one-on-one work with students (with major attention given to reading comprehension and writing instruction), data gathering and evaluation, curriculum  development, and academic support initiatives related to the mission of the Academic  Success Center are included in this position’s responsibilities.  


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Offer one-on-one instruction for drop-ins and scheduled students in need of writing and other related skills, both in person and virtually, as well as  asynchronous feedback. 
  • Teach one-half of a full-time faculty load annually  in first-year writing (12 credits per  academic year).
  • Support the development of first-year writing curriculum, syllabus, activities, and plans.
  • Provide and/or participate in workshops, classroom visits, online  resources, and other learning opportunities for students, staff, and faculty for a variety of writing and academic support needs.
  • Participate in  assessment of Writing Center work, first-year English   courses, and College writing initiatives. 
  • Work with the Academic   Success Center team to make process improvements based on assessment data.
  • Act as a resource   and support person for Writing Program adjunct instructors as needed.
  • Provide proactive support to incoming first-year students through  the First Year Experience and Academic Success Intervention initiatives.
  • Monitor and document student progress through ongoing communication with faculty, tutors, staff, and administrators. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that assigned tasks are completed in compliance with various institutional and regulatory requirements.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Requirements

  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in English, education, Literacy, or related fields.
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience, 3-5 years preferred, with evidence of excellence.
  • Experience with learning management systems and technology in teaching and student support.
  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly effective at working in teams or independently to achieve desired outcomes. 
  • Behave with a high level of integrity, emotional intelligence, and complete confidentiality.
