The roleThe Mission Planning team is looking for a Software Engineer Intern. The Mission Planning team is responsible for algorithms that coordinate the routing and scheduling of multiple autonomous vehicles as they move together in a shared space performing missions to transport payloads within a freight yard. In this role, you will report to the Director of Planning and Controls and work with a world-class team on challenging and interesting problems. You will implement a graph-search optimization technique for multi-agent planning and work hands-on to test your software on Outrider’s autonomous vehicles. Additionally, you will develop Python-based metrics tooling using AWS to gain an understanding of the performance of mission planning algorithms. Over the course of the internship, you will take a feature from implementation through testing and into production.

Duties & Key Objectives
- Take ownership of the software engineering process from design through implementation and testing of algorithms that plan autonomous motions for Outrider’s autonomous vehicles.
- Work effectively in a large, complex, evolving codebase.
- Perform code reviews focusing on design approach, algorithm implementation, interfaces, and best practices.
- Work with diverse, cross-functional teams of engineers and product managers in a fast, collaborative process.
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science, robotics or a related field
- Experience reading, writing, and debugging C++ and Python code
- Exposure to git or similar version control system
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working in a team-based environment on complex/open-ended problems
- Strong analytical and curious mindset
- Attention to detail
- Ability to learn in unstructured environments
Ideal Qualifications
- Experience with robotics, especially robot motion planning or multi-robot algorithms
- Familiarity with the robot operating system (ROS)
- Experience with build automation tools like CMake, Make, and Ninja
- Familiarity with Docker and developing in a dockerized environment
- Experience developing in Linux
