With over 100,000 square feet of space, we offer high-quality programming for all ages, including fitness, wellness, aquatics, childcare, summer camps, and much more. The JCC Aquatics Center provides access to indoor and outdoor pools year-round, with approximately 85 hours of operation a week.
Under the direction of the JCC’s Aquatic Manager, the head lifeguard continuously observes swimmers in their jurisdiction, protecting their safety, making sure rules are followed, giving first aid, and using the rescue techniques prescribed by the American Red Cross when needed. Head lifeguards ensure patrons' safety by preventing and responding to emergencies in a variety of areas at the pools.
Head lifeguards also enforce the facility’s policies, rules, and regulations. These workers are expected to assist in recruiting, overseeing, instructing, and assessing the personnel who work at a swimming facility.
Role and Responsibilities
Normal work hours: varied to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ensure safety of all swimmers by preventative measures and maintenance, and by minimizing hazardous situations. include adding chemicals to a pool according to safety guidelines; ensuring pool decks are clear of any hazards, and maintaining hot tubs and steam rooms.
Coordinates with the Aquatics Director and actively contributes to the smooth operation of all aquatic activities and programs by ensuring all facility rules, policies, and procedures are adhered to and enforced by the staff
Oversees all procedures during emergencies, including providing first aid and CPR, communication to all patrons and staff members, completion of necessary forms and documentation, and reporting all incidents to Aquatics Director
Conduct ongoing maintenance: adjust feeders when necessary, check operations of pump and flow meter, vacuum pool, wash down deck and pump room, clean stainless steel and filters, record pool readings, etc.
Knowledgeable on all aquatic information and programming.
Display a professional appearance with appropriate dress/uniform.
Timely and punctual when reporting to work.
Ensure the aquatic area is safe, clean and orderly.
Opening/ closing duties as well as daily, weekly and monthly chores
Other duties as assigned
QualificationsQualifications and Education Requirements
Basic Qualifications
Ability to work varied work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
High school education or comparable work experience
Minimum of one year of experience as a lifeguard
Current and Valid CPR & First Aid certification
Valid Lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross
Effective leadership skills and a strong work ethic
Strong understanding of staff expectations, policies, and operating a pool
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to show initiative and make decisions, must be able to trouble shoot and anticipate problems
Demonstrate consistent integrity, dependability, responsibility and be able to meet deadlines.
Adaptable and flexible under stressful and/or unusual situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Leadership and supervisory experience overseeing a team
Minimum of 3 years as a lifeguard
Physical/Mental Requirements (ADA Compliance)
Mental requirements include, but are not limited to, the ability to concentrate, take initiative, cope with stress, adapt to and stay alert. Employee will utilize a variety of communication skills on a daily basis to ensure the safety of patrons in addition to providing feedback to subordinate staff.
In order to perform the essential duties of the job, the employee must be able to speak, hear, see and walk more than 2 miles each day.
Ability to sit and stand for long periods
Occasionally lift and/or move 50-100 pounds occasionally
Must be able to perform rescues and lifeguard skills based on American Red Cross Lifeguard Training on a daily basis.
The position may require exposure to extreme weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, cold, and snow
Occasionally exposed to a variety of pool chemicals and cleaning supplies.
Occasionally exposed to high noise levels.
