STUDENT ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST INTERN JOB SUMMARY: This position is a temporary practicum in environmental science. Incumbents will assist environmental scientist as needed by performing any or all of the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to the following:
- Assist with site investigations, data collection, and plan reviews to determine potential project environmental impacts.
- Analyze reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and other topographic and geologic data to support environmental projects.
- Assist in conducting wetland and stream delineations and assist with preparation of jurisdictional determination reports of findings.
- Assist in application of procedures, laws, standards, and regulations pertaining to compliance with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and/or Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
- Assist in preparation of project documents such as constraints statements, coordination letters, special provisions, etc.
- Assist in collection of data and documentation supporting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents.
- Provide field assistance for tree surveys in northwest Arkansas.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree (BS) program from an accredited college or university in an environmental, biological, natural science, natural resources.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret common scientific and technical journals, business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Have excellent presentation skills. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, vendors, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as monetary budgets, cost estimates, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to work with statistical and analytical concepts.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of given variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram.
COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a solid foundation in computer applications. A solid foundation of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Internet software is required.
