The Role
The Executive Director, Medical Affairs - US is a strategic position at the forefront of Moderna’s mission to innovate in the field of mRNA-based therapies and vaccines. This leadership role is responsible for steering the engagements with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support ACIP recommendations and responsible for the Field-Based Medical Affairs organization's engagement with National Medical Societies and Associations to support guideline development and Healthcare Provider education towards raising vaccination confidence and rates. Reporting directly to the VP of Medical Affairs, US, the Executive Director will oversee a team of Field Medical Advisors, ensuring their activities are aligned with Moderna’s medical strategies and objectives and executed with a high degree of scientific expertise, integrity, and digital innovation.
As the gatekeeper and leader of interactions with recommending bodies for our current and next product launches (COVID, COVID NG, RSV, 1010, 1083, CMV, NORO), you will focus on National Stakeholder engagement, including ACIP and medical societies, to support and inform recommendations and guidelines.
Here’s What You’ll Do
Leadership and Strategic Direction: Lead the engagement plan with the US CDC around recommendations, ensuring close collaboration and alignment with internal cross functional teams. Lead the National Field Medical Advisor team, establishing a positive, values-based culture and driving strategic planning and execution of medical engagement activities in the US. Utilize excellent coaching, mentoring, and management skills to ensure the team's efforts are seamlessly integrated with the broader objectives of Moderna’s Medical Affairs organization.
Stakeholder Engagement and Management: Responsible for the development and execution of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) engagement plan, working closely with CDC Leads and. Oversee the development and implementation of Scientific Engagement Plans by the National Field Medical Advisors. Ensure these plans are effectively aligned with Moderna's scientific narrative and support the company's strategic goals. Foster strong relationships across the healthcare ecosystem with recommending bodies, policymakers, and medical societies to enhance patient care outcomes.
Digital and Scientific Communication: Champion a "Digital First" mindset within the team, encouraging the use of digital tools and platforms for engagement with the medical and healthcare community to extend the conversation beyond the moment of contact. Ensure the team is adept at simplifying complex scientific topics for diverse audiences, leveraging Moderna’s Scientific Communications Platform and other innovative tools.
Insight Generation and Medical Intelligence: Direct the team in the strategic discovery and reporting of critical beliefs, information, and thoughts from across the healthcare ecosystem to generate valuable insights. Facilitate the process of sharing insights and knowledge with cross-functional teams to support Moderna’s overall scientific and business strategy.
Medical Engagement Activities: Direct and oversee medical engagement activities such as advisory boards, partnerships, round tables, and conferences. Oversee compliance and reporting protocols to ensure all activities meet regulatory standards.
Collaboration and Cross-Functional Integration: Work closely with internal stakeholders across Medical, Pharmacovigilance, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial, and Clinical Development teams to ensure field medical plans are unified and aligned.
Compliance and Ethical Standards: Uphold and enforce the highest standards of compliance and ethical conduct within the team, especially in relation to the management of adverse events, product quality complaints, and investigator-initiated studies.
Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)
Medical degree and Experience with regulatory or health agencies such as the CDC, FDA, or equivalent, demonstrating a deep understanding of public health policies and regulatory requirements.
Leadership experience: A track record of success in leading field medical teams, with a strong focus on stakeholder engagement and digital communication strategies.
Years of experience: 10+ years of relevant experience in Medical Affairs or a related field.
Language proficiency: Fluent in English; bilingual abilities (especially English/Spanish) are preferred.
Travel availability: Willingness to travel as needed in support of team and organizational objectives
