The Principal Research Systems Engineer works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in the ADD division working with the Transfusion Medicine group. We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.
What You’ll Work On
The Principal Research Systems Engineer applies an advanced, interdisciplinary, and collaborative systems engineering approach to plan, design, develop, and verify lifecycle solutions. This role evaluates customer and end‑user needs, defines and coordinates system performance requirements, integrates technical parameters, and ensures compatibility across all physical, functional, and program interfaces. The Principal Research Systems Engineer leads complex analyses to optimize system architectures and incorporates critical specialty engineering factors such as safety, reliability, maintainability, human factors and regulatory compliance.
This role provides technical leadership across requirements development, system architecture, verification planning, risk management, and technology readiness. The Principal Research Systems Engineer resolves cross-functional technical issues, drives innovation, advances systems engineering practices, and helps guide strategic program initiatives.
In addition:
Guide the definition of system requirements, system specifications, interfaces, and input/output processes.
Lead analysis of system requirements, user needs, and system design; coordinate system evaluation and verification activities.
Lead development, optimization, and integration of system architecture
Lead analyses related to safety, reliability, systems integration, and regulatory compliance.
Lead design reviews, development activities, and system‑level testing to assess performance against requirements and specifications.
Oversee reliability testing and assessments of system interactions.
Oversee development of manufacturing processes tied to system design; guide troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis for hardware, software, and reagent-related system issues.
Support investigation resolutions for field issues, factory issues, hardware concerns, software behaviors, and reagent/system interactions.
Prepare and guide development of Technical Memos related to field actions, factory events, system-level assessments, design/development efforts, and risk or regulatory findings.
Support risk management activities by assessing QRs, Events, Design Plans, and system-level risk controls.
Apply and guide systematic problem-solving methods to identify, prioritize, communicate, and resolve complex system-level issues.
