About the role

Most people ops roles are a treadmill.

Same onboarding checklist, same open enrollment fire drill, same twelve Slack DMs asking where to find the dental card. You get good at running it, and then you run it again next quarter.

We want someone who's over that.

This role owns the operational backbone of the employee experience at Expel. You'll own the full employee lifecycle from onboarding through offboarding, along with benefits, leave administration, HRIS, and compliance. But the real job is making all of that work smaller. Every manual, repetitive task is a backlog item waiting to be automated or turned into self-service. The goal is for employees to get what they need without opening a ticket, managers to handle routine people work without waiting on you, and for you to spend your time improving systems instead of working through a queue.

You'll be the face of benefits and onboarding, and the person employees trust with sensitive situations on difficult days. You'll also be the person who looks at a process that's always been done manually and asks, "Why?" If both of those sound like you, keep reading.

What Expel can do for you

  • Give you real ownership of the People Operations function. You're not executing someone else's playbook. You're helping build it.
  • Back your passion for automation with the mandate and tooling to eliminate manual work.
  • Put you in the room with Employee Experience, Finance, and IT as a strategic partner, not a ticket queue.
  • Offer a company that takes care of its crew, including unlimited PTO that leaders actually model, up to 24 weeks of parental leave, and benefits you'll be proud to administer.
  • Grow the scope of your role as the company continues to scale, if that's the path you're looking for.

What you can do for Expel

  • Own the employee lifecycle. Run onboarding through offboarding from end to end while delivering a consistent, accurate, compliant, and thoughtful employee experience.
  • Run onboarding. Background check monitoring, orientation scheduling and logistics, and close partnership with IT so systems access is ready on day one.
  • Manage offboarding. Handle voluntary and involuntary departures and the exit interview process with care and consistency.
  • Administer benefits. Own Expel's US benefit programs, including open enrollment, new hire enrollments, qualifying life events, invoice reviews, and ongoing data audits.
  • Manage leave programs. Parental leave, FMLA, short-term and long-term disability. Make them clear, well-documented, and easy for employees to navigate at a stressful time.
  • Lead HRIS administration. Configure the system to enable a smooth employee experience and maintain day-to-day updates — compensation, reporting, absence — with accuracy that holds up under audit.
  • Own compliance reporting. ACA, EEO-1, SOC 2 audit support, Medicare Part D notifications, PCORI filings, and the annual workers' comp premium audit. Keep our processes aligned to regulatory requirements before anyone has to ask.
  • Automate relentlessly. Treat repetitive work as a bug. Build self-service so employees and managers get answers and take action without going through you.
  • Enable managers. Equip managers with templates, tools, and guidance so they can confidently handle routine people processes without relying on HR for every request.
  • Support employees. Field requests over email and Slack accurately and on time, while steadily reducing request volume through better self-service.
  • Maintain the employee handbook. Keep it current, useful, and honest.

What you should bring to Expel

  • 4–7 years in people operations at a senior individual-contributor level
  • Direct experience administering an HRIS (Workday, Rippling, or similar) — not just using one, running one
  • Benefits administration across medical, dental, vision, FSA, and COBRA
  • Leave administration experience (FMLA, short- and long-term disability, parental leave)
  • Familiarity with US compliance reporting (ACA, EEO-1, Medicare Part D, PCORI) and audit support such as SOC 2
  • Experience with HR ticketing and workflow tools (Zendesk or similar), and a real track record of automating manual processes
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office 365, and comfort using Anthropic Claude and other AI tools in your daily work
  • Experience in a fast-paced, high-growth environment (SaaS ideally)
  • Comfort with ambiguity and evolving priorities. A role that will change shape should read as the appeal, not the risk
  • A strong service mindset, high integrity with sensitiv
