This is NOT a remote role and requires onsite work in NYC three days a week.

Overview
NYPL’s Infrastructure and Operations team architects, implements, and supports technology to support all business efforts. The Platform Engineering team works closely with Product Managers and business partners to deliver technically-sound, repeatable, and highly-automated systems. 
The DevOps Engineer will be responsible for the daily operations of the DevOps function including planning, implementation, and aligning with the organization’s fiscal and technical needs. These functions include the tactical engineering, upkeep, and modernization of systems and processes related to  Cloud Infrastructure (AWS) and on-premise infrastructure that supports NYPL’s Digital footprint (websites, apps, eReader) and Preservation efforts (Digital Repository). 
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:

• NYPL Cloud Infrastructure
• Implementation of cloud technologies to meet business needs
• Relationships with key clients (developers, business units)
• Deployment oversight and reliability services

Teach:

• Bring outside knowledge and share new ways to secure our cloud environment, and expand use of automation.  
• Deployment methodologies used by DevOps

Learn:

• NYPL specific infrastructure requirements that help support BAU and new projects.
• Emerging technologies that may help the Library deliver world-class services in cost effective ways.

Improve:

• The use of IAC tools such as Terraform.
• Observability of system health.
• Refactor, modernize, and improve automation throughout the stack.

Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:

• Learn NYPL Cloud Infrastructure
• Meet primary clients and peers
• Get familiar with Library’s priorities in this space
• Understand processes and procedures of IT and Digital

3 months, this person will:

• Collaborate with the rest of the DevOps team, manage NYPL cloud Infrastructure.
• Be point of contact for one or more dev teams
• Be independent in managing deployment schedules and execution

6 months and beyond, this person will:

• Be responsible for NYPL cloud infrastructure, and its upkeep, be able to participate in major project initiatives.
• Be representative for DevOps related matters across the organization

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with NYPL IT teams and business units to deliver high quality technology platforms, determine needs/requirements, and ensure project success.
• Hands-on, expert level, administration and management of diverse technical infrastructure including Linux servers, containers, etc.  
• Deep knowledge and working experience with core infrastructure technologies including DNS, DHCP, Version Control, Configuration Management, Continuous Integration, infrastructure as code tools.
• Architect and plan AWS environments to meet NYPL needs. 
• Work closely with Product Management teams to ensure optimal use of available resources to meet business demands. 
• Ensure security and documentation of managed systems.
• Ensure appropriate monitoring of NYPL systems, sound backup practices are in place, and applicable systems are highly-available. 
• Evaluate emerging technologies and existing technology to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Performs related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field or strong combination of education and work experience. 

Required Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of experience implementing large scale compute platforms and support infrastructures with 3 years of cloud experience. 

Required Skills

• Proven ability to collaborate with highly technical teams consisting of application developers, database and network engineers, as well as non-technical business units.
• Deep experience working in a product oriented environment with Product Owners, Project Managers, and diverse project methodologies. Ability to size and estimate time of req
