About the program: The Student Internship Program at Volvo Cars in Charleston is designed to introduce students to the fast-paced, high tech, and ever-changing industry of automotive manufacturing. In this program students will receive direct hands-on learning experiences and a deeper understanding of working in a global company. We offer paid full-time work and a safe learning environment, for our interns to practice applying the knowledge gained in the classroom in a professional environment.

 

More about us: The factory in South Carolina is currently responsible for assembling the Volvo S60, our mid-sized sedan, and we’re also preparing to launch two new vehicles. Our plant is rapidly growing and sits on 1,600 acres of land in Ridgeville, South Carolina, just a short drive from Charleston.

Department Summary:

Manufacturing Engineering (ME) Painted Body & Geometry (PBG) is responsible for preparation, designing, manufacturing and commissioning of production lines to be used by new car models into our production facilities. Within this department, the group ME PBG Industrialization Body is located in Charleston and consists of 15-20 engineers that is currently occupied preparing for the two new car models that will be integrated into the production lines. The team consists of generic area engineers and leaders, but also technology specialists within automation, robotics, joining and geometry.

 

Responsibilities:

During a car project, we do not only install physical production lines, we are also in parallel setting our digital twin which is a copy of our production lines, but virtually.

The internship within ME PBG Industrialization will be to assure that our digital twin model is updated according to reality by using onsite verification, 3D scanning data and the already existing digital model in Process Simulate format.

This project will require collaboration and interface with simulation engineers, maintenance engineers and other resources from Manufacturing to ensure a good end result.

The scope will be to update our digital twin model for our SPA2 lines in Body Shop in respect to plant scanning.

 

Educational Preferences: Junior year of technical college or above.

 

Competencies/Requirements:

  • Self-sufficient in Microsoft Office Toolbox
  • Experience in 3D modelling tools and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools is highly beneficial.
  • An analytical mindset and a will to learn new things, will also be valued very high.
  • Collaborative, being result-driven and being able to build trust in people that one work with are also properties we are looking for
