Wisconsin Humanities seeks a director for its Community Powered Tribal Health Initiative (CPTHI). In this new position, the successful candidate will be responsible for partnering with tribal, academic, and health partners to adapt the existing Community Powered curriculum, toolkit, and training to make it more culturally-responsive to tribal communities and Indigenous conceptions of health.
Community Powered (CP) is an initiative of Wisconsin Humanities that puts the humanities tools of history, culture, and storytelling into the hands of Wisconsinites through a community resilience training program. The CPTHI will build on CP’s award-winning training program and reimagine it to better serve tribal communities and assist them in addressing community mental health concerns. The CPTHI Director will report to the Director of Community Powered.
Key Job Responsibilities:
This is a 3-year grant-funded position. In the first year, the CPTHI Director will:
Strengthen existing and establish new partnerships with tribal communities around the state
Establish an advisory committee and run its meetings
Work with tribal, health, and academic partners to assess the existing CP curriculum, training, and toolkit to adapt it to better meet tribal mental health needs
Host listening sessions in tribal communities around Wisconsin to better understand health needs and how the humanities can address those needs
Draft, implement, and evaluate CPTHI’s new tribal health focused curriculum, toolkit, and training program
Work with advisory committee to develop a recruitment plan and selection process for potential trainees
In the second two years of the program, the CPTHI Director will manage the program with participants from tribal communities. The director will:
Manage a selection process for trainees representing multiple Wisconsin tribal communities
Organize and teach training workshops based on the new curriculum
Mentor trainees as they design community projects that address tribal mental health and wellbeing
Develop evaluation strategies for the training program based on Indigenous approaches to program assessment
Document training activities and community events
Publicize public events and communicate with media as needed

Wisconsin Humanities is an independent nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that strengthens the roots of community life through educational and cultural programs that inspire civic participation and individual imagination. WH grantmaking and statewide initiatives build strong communities from the ground up, providing people with the tools and resources to bring their ideas to life. WH is the state’s independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is governed by a volunteer board of directors from across Wisconsin. Since its founding in 1972, WH has also been affiliated with the University of Wisconsin. Funding for WH comes from the NEH, the state of Wisconsin, and private donors.
Compensation:
The Director of the Community Powered Tribal Health Initiative (Official Title: Outreach Specialist) is a full-time, salaried (exempt), fixed-term academic staff position (this is a 3-year grant-funded position).
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $58,000 - $61,300 commensurate with the candidate’s education, related experience, and qualifications.
