About the role
Welcome to Fi.
We’re a passionate team from Square, Google, Peloton, Uber, and more working to transform the dog-human relationship. Our mission? Develop cutting-edge technology to revolutionize what it means to be a dog parent. The dog industry remains firmly stuck in the past and we are here to change that. Fi is leveraging our team's talent and expertise to improve the lives of the millions of dogs in the U.S. Real-time location tracking, activity, sleep and behavior monitoring – and that's just the beginning.
The most exciting aspect of our work? Bridging the communication gap between dogs and humans. Imagine a world where everyone knows how their dog feels in real time and how to keep their best friend in good shape. That's the future we're building at Fi.
If you're someone who thrives in innovative, collaborative work environments and feels strongly about helping dogs live longer, better lives, Fi could be the perfect fit. Join us in our pursuit of the “impossible,” or as we call it here “let me find a way,” to redefine the future of dog ownership together.
Fi is looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer!
We’re looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to own the design and execution of Fi’s hardware products. You will play a key role in shaping product-level design from concept through mass production, and set a high bar for mechanical engineering on the team.
This role is ideal for someone with deep fundamentals in consumer electronics who also knows how to be scrappy and make smart tradeoffs in a startup environment. The right candidate will be capable of growing into a leadership role over time, guiding others and influencing the direction of Fi’s mechanical engineering function.

What You’ll Do:
- Lead product mechanical designs: Drive the development of rugged, compact, high-performance hardware for Fi products—from early concepts through global mass production.
- Prototype and iterate quickly: Build and evaluate prototypes at every stage of development, from 3D-printed proof-of-concept parts to fully functional pre-production builds. Use hands-on testing and iteration to rapidly validate designs.
- Set the standard: Establish best practices in design, documentation, and testing, raising the technical bar.
- Work with suppliers: Collaborate directly with overseas tooling and molding partners (including on-site involvement in China) to drive DFM, tooling validation, and production optimization.
- Hands-on problem solving: Debug molding machine parameters, troubleshoot production challenges, and ensure finishing quality to get designs successfully to market.
- Reliability ownership: Define and execute product reliability testing—deciding what should be tested and how to design effective tests.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Partner with industrial design, electrical engineering, and firmware teams to deliver balanced designs that meet technical, aesthetic, and user needs.
- Innovate in wearables and IoT: Push the limits in advanced antenna integration, waterproofing, and device miniaturization without sacrificing durability.
What You Bring to the Table:
- Experience: 10+ years in mechanical engineering for high-volume consumer electronics, wearables, or IoT products, ideally with startup experience.
- Expertise: Deep fundamentals in plastic and metal part design (Solidworks CAD preferred), with hands-on experience in injection molding, die casting, MIM, stamping, machining, and adhesives.
- Prototyping chops: Strong experience with 3D printing, machining, and other rapid prototyping methods to validate designs quickly.
- Supplier collaboration: Proven success working closely with overseas vendors, including on-site work with Chinese-speaking partners. Strong communication skills to bridge technical details and cultural nuance.
- Analytical ability: Skilled at estimating performance before prototyping, using FEA, hand calculations, and engineering judgment.
- Reliability focus: Experience designing and executing reliability and validation testing for consumer electronics.
- Product-level ownership: End-to-end experience leading the mechanical design of entire products, from industrial design collaboration to sustaining engineering.
- Adaptability: Comfortable balancing best-practice rigor with the speed and tradeoffs of a fast-paced hardware startup.
- Dog lover: Our NYC office is dog-friendly—your toughest beta testers are right here.
Why You'll Love Us:
- Time to Recharge: Enjoy flexible PTO to take the breaks you need.
- Top-Notch Health Coverage: We’ve got your back (and teeth and eyes) with full medical
