The Team

As a Lead HR Business Partner at Upstart you will be responsible for and lead the day-to-day HR support for business critical functions. From front line manager coaching, to Leadership team effectiveness, to performance cycles and cultural initiatives, you will partner closely with key members of the Upstart leadership team to help them uplevel the function and the employee experience. You will also be a key member of our growing People org, participating in or leading company-wide HR programs that could include initiatives in performance and talent management, employee engagement, system implementation, diversity and inclusion, development and more
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote
Time Zone Requirements - The leadership team you will support primarily operates on the West Coast time zone, however you will have many stakeholders working on EST and CST. Your hours can be flexible based on your location, schedule and preference.
Travel Requirements - This team has regular onsite collaboration sessions. These occur a maximum of 3 days per quarter primarily in the San Mateo office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Coach and advisor: Advise and consult with leaders as they drive scale for Upstart. From org design, to talent development, to rewards and recognition, and high performance culture, act as a trusted thought partner and coach.
- Manager support: Build relationships with managers to ensure their confidence and trust in the HR team; offer ideas and resources to help them thrive in their roles and careers at Upstart.
- Employee relations: Engage with employees to understand their needs, help resolve their conflicts, and unblock their challenges enabling them to do their best work at Upstart.
- Performance management: Partner with leaders to identify high performers and help them grow with Upstart; and to work through low performance management to maintain our high performance bar.
- Project and program support: Implement and support core HR programs, processes and initiatives such as performance management, diversity and inclusion, compensation, employee development, and succession planning.
- Solve problems: Be an adaptable problem solver, liaising between the People team and the business to achieve the best outcomes for the organization. Leverage your experience and judgment to provide thoughtful and appropriate counsel based on the balance between long term and short term business needs.
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum qualifications:
- BA/BS degree required, additional HR certifications and degrees are a plus
- 8+ years of human resources experience
- 5+ years as an HR Business Partner supporting VP+ clients
- Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working in the tech industry
- Comfort in dealing with employee conflict, sensitive issues, and confidential information
- Fantastic performance management and employee relations skills and experience
- Exceptional communication skills and strong analytical aptitude - get ready to work with data and spreadsheets!
- Tenacity to challenge the status quo, and the determination to reimagine programs we have today and/or build from scratch when appropriate
