About the role

Overview

The S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (QANR) at Utah State University is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Business Manager SR to oversee the financial and operational management of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station (UAES). This position is integral to ensuring smooth operations, sound financial management, and compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations across these diverse units. 

Reporting to the QANR Financial Officer, the Business Manager SR will manage complex funding sources and oversee activities such as budget preparation and grant accounting.  The role also includes supervising business services staff, coordinating with university departments, and implementing innovative solutions to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead critical operational functions and contribute to the success of QANR's academic and research missions.

Responsibilities

  • Manage federal and state appropriations for the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), including prepare program of applications to USDA NIFA, formulate and review budget and expenditure of AES funds within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and other colleges to ensure compliance with university policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations. Work closely with Program Coordinator to ensure the budget distributed is in line with the 250+ research projects.
  • Manage daily financial activities for AES and Dean’s office. Prepare and review budget, revenue, expenses, payroll entries, invoices, and other accounting transactions, such as distribution of IDC return, salary planner, Confocal billing, publication reimbursement, UAES and Dean’s office travel support, deposits, and Sheep farm billings.
  • Compile and analyze financial information to provide financial assistance to the director, dean, department heads, principal investigators, business managers, and staff.
  • Coordinate and design a database system for the financial management of all funding within the college, implement financial management systems, and report.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business field plus four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Contract and grant experience
  • Experience working in USU Business Services and knowledge of processes and policies
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel and Access Database
  • Experience or knowledge of Agricultural Experiment Station program

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of finance enterprise systems and software.
  • Computer skills, including Excel and Windows.
  • Knowledge of management reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Ability to train and lead staff.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of contracting process and associated local, state, federal, and other regulations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Skilled in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections.
  • Knowledge of software to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, comparisons, impacts, and/or projections.
  • Knowledge of current business issues and trends.
  • Expert knowledge of financial principles, practices, concepts, and the analysis of reports of financial data.
