Managing Director of External Relations - School of Medicine
The BYU School of Medicine is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Managing Director of External Relations to provide executive leadership for advancement, donor development, alumni relations, marketing, and strategic communications.
Reporting directly to the Dean and serving as a member of the School of Medicine leadership team, this role works closely with BYU Philanthropies and university partners to strengthen fundraising initiatives, external relationships, alumni engagement, and the School’s local, national, and global reputation. All efforts are aligned with BYU’s mission to provide a spiritually grounded and scientifically rigorous education for future physicians who serve as healers, teachers, researchers, leaders, and disciples of Jesus Christ.
What you will be doing in this position:
Advancement
Marketing and Strategic Communications
- Develop and Execute the BYU School of Medicine’s Strategic Communications Strategy: Create and implement a unified and consistent strategic communications strategy for the School of Medicine and its offices and departments, that advances the School of Medicine’s priorities across corporate, not-for-profit/foundation, governmental and other higher education institutions with the goal of furthering the School of Medicine’s and BYU’s national and global reputation and objectives.
- Provide Strategic Oversight of Communications: Direct all development communications and donor events, ensuring messaging and activities are consistent with the university’s mission and values.
- Develop and Execute the BYU School of Medicine Strategic Multi-Channel Brand and Marketing Strategy: In collaboration with the School of Medicine’s Office of Admissions, will create and implement digital content, social media campaigns and the production and publication of other digital/print marketing materials, to attract and recruit future students, and to showcase BYU School of Medicine faculty, students, and programs to leaders, donors and alumni in an effort to advance the School of Medicine’s and BYU’s reputation and profile while maintaining cohesive marketing and branding strategies in accordance with university standards.
- Manage Digital and Marketing Channels: In collaboration with the School of Medicine’s Office of Admissions, will supervise the School of Medicine’s website(s), social media platforms, digital signage, and marketing materials to ensure content is engaging, accurate, and accessible to diverse audiences.
- Oversee Professional Communications: Manage the development of communication materials, marketing campaigns, and media strategies that enhance the School of Medicine’s reputation both locally and globally.
- Direct Crisis Communications Management: Lead crisis communication planning and serve as crisis communication lead during crises, safeguarding the reputation of the School of Medicine, BYU, and the Church.
- Foster Media Relationships: Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets, overseeing the public release of information to enhance the BYU School of Medicine’s reputation and visibility.
- In concert with university communications personnel, serve as a primary spokesperson and liaison to media outlets, managing all press inquiries, developing key messages, and ensuring consistent, accurate representation of the BYU School of Medicine’s mission and priorities across print, broadcast, and digital platforms
