Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the development and presentation of environmental educational programs for visitors at state resorts and parks. Incumbents are also responsible for trail and volunteer programs at the assigned park or resort.

Typical Functions

  • Develops environmental educational programs for resort and park visitors; organizes activities; interprets the natural and cultural resources of the park area; leads nature walks; develops brochures and the text for signs; constructs and maintains trails and displays within park nature centers.
  • Conducts educational programs for schools, scout groups, and others at locations that may be outside the park itself.
  • Prepares and submits required reports, evaluations and visitor surveys.
  • Coordinates the activities of seasonal staff and volunteers who are assigned to the naturalist.

Level Descriptor

At this level employees are assigned responsibilities for performing a full range of environmental education programs. This includes planning and conducting various programs, working with other staff to schedule and present these programs as part of the facility’s recreational program, and working with volunteers or seasonal employees as assigned, including providing required supervision and training.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in an environmental or biological science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience in environmental education or ecology or closely related work for each year of the required education.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of environmental science and natural and cultural history. Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; to exercise initiative and work independently; and to take direction and instruction.
